Having been told by my health visitor that my boys needed to be slowly weaned onto cups I decided to shop around in Boots, one of my favourite stores.

I browsed through all the different colours, brands and styles of beakers. They had used a beaker before meant for babies aged 6months plus, but they just tipped them upside down and their drink spilt everywhere. So I was trying to find one which was supposedly a non-spill beaker.

I came across a pack of two Avent non-spill magic cups. They caught my eye really as I noticed my friends son was drinking from one days before and they were in a pack of two, so perfect for me as I had two babies. It was roughly £6.99 for the 2 cups together, which I thought was a brilliant price, especially for Avent as it seems such a popular and expensive brand. These particular cups are specifically for children aged 12months plus.

The Avent cups came in many different colours but I purchased one bright yellow and another bright blue. On the front it clearly has the word Avent in blue writing, so no mistaking what brand they are. The lids screw off for you to pour the drink inside, and the cups come with handles which are optional. You can however use these handles on wideneck bottles if you are trying to get your child to hold onto his/her own bottles. These cups I also find easy to clean, they are simple to take apart just by unscrewing the lid and taking the sucker out the way you would with a teat from a bottle and then placing it back in and screwing the lid back on. By doing this you allow the cup to have a thorough clean. There is a see through plastic lid on top of the sucker itself, which keeps it clean and protected.

As for the sucker, yes it is a non spill one, which means that your child has to actually suck from the sucker to get his/her drink out. The suckers on these beakers are very similar to what we drink out of when we drink from non spill sports bottles, we have to suck them to get our drink out the way a child does with these beakers. Hence the higher age range for them.

I am so far very impressed with these cups, my boys are now 16months and still use them, it took them maybe a week or so to get used to actually sucking from them as the beakers they had before the drink just poured - everywhere! But now they drink with ease, and beakers are apparently better for them and their teeth than drinking from a bottle all the time.

They havn't used the handles I personally feel these confused them more, they had already grasped how to hold a bottle on their own, so to hold the beaker on their own was just the same probably.

You can also buy these beakers in supermarkets, again in many bright colours. They are definitely worth the money in my opinion. You can also try your child with them before they are 12months if you feel they are ready for one.

I used a similar style cup for my kiddies when they were little. A little advice though, put the handles back on again to help get your boys used to holding handled cups, which will aid them onto the next step of a proper cup without lid/spout :-)

What do they think mothers did before health visitors were invented. My sister threw her HV out after she suggested she wouldn't be a good mother because she was only 19. She's never had another visit, my niece is nearly 6, and she's a great mum without the advice of some well meaning crater faced hag.
