Advantages: Only takes 4-8 mins to sterilise 4 bottles!
Disadvantages: It can be difficult to arrange equiptment in the steriliser.
Whilst i was pregnant i spent loadz of money getting everything that i needed for my new arrival. But it took me a while to buy a steriliser as there are so many different kinds on the market it was hard to make a decision at first until i had found out a bit more about each one.
I spoke to my friend about it who had just had a baby a wee while before i got pregnant and she told me that she had used a microwave steriliser! I had never heard of the microwave ones before and i thought it would be ideal! As it wouldnt take as long as most other types of steriliser. But my only worry was that it might not sterilise the feeding equiptment properly! As when i was pregnant i was permenantly in nesting mode! I always wanted everything to be clean and tidy which at the beginning was great but after a while it just became very time consuming and i was getting very tired of it but there was nothing i could do to stop myself!
As you will know sterilising a baby's feeding equiptment in its firat year is very important as they are more likley to pick up infections, colds etc as their immune systems are not yet fully developed and are very weak when it comes to fighting off infection!
So me and my partner decided that we needed a quick and easy way to sterilise the bottles! So we opted for the microwave steam steriliser from avent. Which came with 4 bottles, teats, etc included all for £20! Wot a bargain! Also this steriliser isnt just for sterilising bottles you can use it for all your babys feeding equiptment. Although as it is not very big (holds a max of 4 bottles at any 1 time) you may need to put it on several times. So that you can spread out the equiptment in the steriliser to ensure that it is all done properly.
Some of the ways the instruction book tells you to put the bottles in is a bit fiddly and at your first couple of attempts can take some time but after you have done it a couple of times it wiil become second nature and you will be doing it in minutes!
HOW TO USE
1. Ensure that all bottles are thouroghly cleaned and no milk residue is left around the bottle. As old milk left in the bottle can lead to stomach upsets etc!
2. Measure out 200ml of water and empty it into the base of the steriliser.
3. Place all the bottles into the steriliser correctly. It will depend how many bottles you are sterilising as to which way you put them in. So always consult your user manual for details.
4. Place the lid on top being careful not to knock any of the bottles out of place and clip it onto the sides.
5. Put the steriliser into the the microwave and put on for the correct amount of time 4-8mins ( the user manual will tell you how long to put it in for depending on the power of your microwave.
6. Once it has finished in the microwave leave in to cool for 10 mins as it can become very hot and if you open it to quickly after the cycle has finished you are likley to be scalded by the steam.
7. Take the bottles out and assemble them accordingly usingh the plastic teat tongs to pull the teats through the bottle rings.
HOW LONG CAN I LEAVE THE BOTTLES IN THE STERILISER FOR?
If left unopened the bottles will stay sterile in the steriliser for 3 hrs.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
I paid £19.99 for mine from mothercare and it came with 4 bottles in it already. Which is good as you will need all the bottles you can get! But it can also be purchased from the likes of Argos, Boots etc.
MY OPINION
In my opinion this is by far the easiest way to sterilise your babys feeding equiptment! Just shove it in the microwave no need for fussing around with sterilising tablets/liquid!
Thank you all for reading my reveiw. I hope you all found it of some use!
xx

- 05/04/06 I found the description of the item more like a part of teh manual then a personal review/opinion. £19.99 seems excellent price for 4 Avent bottles and a machine! |

- 25/03/06 We also used a steam steriliser when our daughter was born and found it really simple and quick like you. Much better than the Milton sterilising tablets ! |
