Avent Steam Steriliser
Advantages: Quick and easy to use
Disadvantages: Quite large
I bought the Avent Steam Steriliser after being advised to use Avent bottles by a friend of mine. The unit is mains operated and kills germs by steaming them. The unit is quite large 32cm in height and 23cm wide and weighs about 1kg. It came with two bottles, small tongs, de-scaling sachets, a small jug and a brush for cleaning.
It hold 6 Avent bottles which fit into the unit which has a blue plastic tray, there are two levels and then the top part is where the bottles are placed, neck first so the steam gets into them effectively. It's fast and easy to use, and includes internal racks which can be clipped together to form a dishwasher basket, if you feel the need to wash prior to sterilisation. The instruction manual explains how to stack the sterilser so all the bottles and bits fit in properly.
Once the unit has been filled, you add 90mls of clean tap water and push down the button on the front of the unit, it takes about 8 minutes. As long as you do not open the lid the bottles remain sterilised for 6 hours, which is useful.
Once the cycle has been run, simply lift ff the lid, being careful as it's very hot when its just, I would leave the unit to cool down for a while first, and assemble the bottles using the small tongs to prevent contamination.
I did on occasion, having been sleep deprived or in a rush stack up the unit and switch it on without adding the water, luckily there is an automatic switch off so the unit does not continue the cycle and does not become damaged.
It comes with a few de-scaling sachets which I would recommend using, every 4 weeks or so to extend the life of the sterilser and keep it clean. Its really easy to do by mixing up the sachet in water and running a cycle, then rinsing, its all explained on the back of the packet. You can also buy new sachets from Boots when you run out.
I used the unit for about 9 months in total and have now given it away, its still working just as well.
I would definitely recommend to others, it easy to stack, quick, easy to clean and effective. The only down side is that it's quite large.
Summary: Easy to use, quick cycle and does the job well.
