Advantages: Lets you child sit unaided safely
Disadvantages: Baby could get out of it when they are older
I recently visited a friend who has an 18 month old child and she asked me if I had a Bumbo, I looked at her as if to say what on earth are you talking about as I had never herd of such a thing. Five minutes later after rooting around in her loft she produced what I can only describe as a chair that looked like a potty.
So what is a Bumbo, well it's a seat for babies from around 4 months (or who can support their own heads) and up to around 14 months. They come in a variety of cool colours. It basically (as mentioned earlier) looks like an oversized potty; it has a high back on it and little post at the front that goes between your babies legs. The chair is made out of a lightweight soft foam material (which is non-toxic and environmentally friendly) and has a plastic type coating so it's very easy to wipe clean.
The Bumbo is designed to support your baby in an upright position safely so it gives you peace of mind that they are safe so you can get on with what ever you need to (although I have read that when they get older they can wriggle out of it), it also lets them sit unaided with both hands free so they can play.
My little girl loves this seat although one problem we did have was she kept dropping her toys and would then start crying as she had nothing to play with so my other half fashioned a toy bar to sit in front of it (like the ones you have on bouncy seats) so she can sit there and play with her toy without fear of dropping them and not being able to get them back. She now quite happily sits in this chair playing away.
My friend also suggested feeding her in this chair which I did with disastrous results, she was so busy looking around and tipping her head back etc she ended up wearing more than she ate so I went back to feeding her in her bouncy chair, I will try the Bumbo again when she is a bit older.
The Bumbos are not over expensive, Amazon have them at £27.95 with free delivery but I found that if you look in the new & used section (usually next to the main price) you can get a brand new one for £10 with £6 postage so a saving of over £10. There are also play trays available for these chairs, I do not have one but they look like quite a good idea, they give the chair a tray like you have on a high chair, these cost around £10.
Having never herd of these seat before I am so glad my friend gave me one, it has turned out to be a handy little chair. As it is so lightweight I now chuck it in the back of my car and take it everywhere with me, its ideal for when you visit family etc because you can stick it on the floor and put your baby in it a know they are going to be quite happy playing in it.
Summary: A great invention that allows your child to sit unaided & lets you get on with whatever you need to

- 24/07/09 The tray's are very useful - I stick highchair toys on mine, that way my son can't just evict all the toys & end up wailing! |
