Bumbo Baby Seat
Advantages: Comfortable seat where child can sit and play
Disadvantages: Have to have eyes in the back of your head once their legs get a little bit stronger
Though my health visitor doesn't recommend them, we used the Bumbo for both of my children. I was warned that if your child sits in them for too long then they tend to sit up and support themselves a few months slower as they rely on the back support. I can't really envisage sitting children in it for too long anyway.
The bumbo which I am reviewing is a floor seat recommended for babies of about four months upwards/ babies who are able to support their own heads. It is not recommended for babies over the age of 12 months- though I deemed it to be useless from about 8 months, when my daughters started pushing themselves backwards/forwards and onto the floor!!
We found the bumbo particularly useful as we could leave the babies to play, knowing that they wouldn't get upset about being strapped in -as there are no straps. Despite there being no straps, the baby remains secure due to the way the seat is moulded. There is a small gap for the childs legs, plus the back is moulded into the shape of a childs ribcage. The bumbo is really low down, so that babies don't feel restricted or unable to reach toys etc. It is made out of a firm rubber material that can withstand teething babies, without being harmful in any way. It is also easy to wipe clean.
The bumbo measures at:
H 25cm, W 43cm, D 43cm
We purchased ours for £35.00 from Argos, but they are available in a large selection of stores. We purchased a shatter resistant play tray to go with it, which fits neatly into the table. This is ideal as the babies start becoming more aware and need distracting and securing in. The tables are ideal when they are young, but as with the bumbo, they soon outgrow the tray.
I would recommend the bumbo, as with my youngest daughter it helped her to get her wind up as she was sat in a better position. My youngest was also reluctant to sit up for long periods of time-but after putting her in this for half an hour/an hour each day she improved considerably. Both of my daughters learning skills improved, and they loved being able to watch everything I did.
My only negative would be that I disagree that this is suitable over the age of about 8 months
Summary: Ideal seat for young babies
