Advantages: Affordable, sturdy, keeps toys in easy reach and fab for weaning
We bought our bumbo when my daughter was around fourteen weeks old and as we loved it so much we decided to buy the play tray, which is the only accessory available for the bumbo. This retails at around £10, however we managed to get ours a little cheaper - £8.50. I'd quite happily of paid the couple of extra quid though had it not been reduced as it is well worth the money in my opinion.
This is a really handy accessory as it transforms the bumbo into a mini highchair; really handy seeing as my little girls highchair is incredibly bulky and a pain to set up! The tray is a little awkward to attatch to the bumbo seeing as my daughter needs to be in the bumbo before I can attatch it - when she was smaller I was able to put her in once I'd set it up but now she's bigger and more wiggly it's awkward getting her at the right angle to put her in!
I always make sure that her hands are out of the way and then slot the play tray on the front of the bumbo. It clips on securely and it's not too much effort as it's not heavy or bulky. Taking it off is quick and easy, however storing it inbetween uses is a bit of a pain as it looks out of place amongst my daughters toys and it's too big to store in the kitchen cupboards, so we stick ours in the spare bedroom whenever we're not using it.
The play tray is only available in one colour; white, which I find handy as dirt/food/drool etc shows up prominently so I am able to make sure that every bit of dirt is wiped off. Cleaning it is really quick and easy as it's made of plastic and the surface is smooth so bits of food etc can't get stuck in any crevices. The edge is slightly raised meaning rusk crumbs tend to end up gathered around the edges but it's easy to wipe down; I use either wet wipes, a damp sponge or a j cloth.
The play tray is really sturdy and durable and it is ideal for introducing new toys to my baby as she is able to see them at a better level than she would on her stomach or back and she has both hands free. It also keeps the toy in one place - whenever she has tummy time I find myself up and down every 2 minutes because she's always pushing toys away from herself by mistake, where as in the bumbo she is able to play with them properly as it keeps her reasonably still and the toys are easy to reach.
The smooth, even surface makes the tray ideal for playing with toys that have wheels and as the tray is so easy to clean, messy play, eg painting with Mummy isn't out of the question either. I also find that the play tray comes in handy whenever Erin needs to entertain herself for a short period, for example when I'm in the shower. Without the tray there, her toys would fall onto the floor, whereas with the tray it helps to keep the toys all together and in easy reach of my baby.
