Bumbo Play Tray
Advantages: Great addition to your Bumbo
Disadvantages: None - although the extra expense might sting after buying the Bumbo
We were lucky enough to have bought the Bumbo second hand and it came with its own official tray, this hard plastic tray that fits perfectly onto the front of the award winning baby accessory/seat. The Bumbo is essentially a solid but soft foam based seat, durable enough for your child's weight to be taken as they sit in it, but soft enough that any contact won't bruise or hurt them like a hard plastic seat would or could. Our son's highchair for example is great but it has hard bits that he'd hurt himself on if he fell onto them.
The tray itself usually comes as a separate item, and you should be able to get hold of a new one for £10 or under. It's designed to fit perfectly with the Bumbo, and it does. The Bumbo has a pommel at the front and the tray has a similar shaped dip on its underside that the tray can slot onto the Bumbo with. This makes it solid and less likely to move around once on. The clever design continues with the base. The tray has a sheer drop from this dip, that snugs the front of the Bumbo, and there is then a lip that tucks under the Bumbo itself in order to provide the final secure element to the tray. The child's weight in the Bumbo keeps it under the Bumbo, and the measurements are precise enough that it's more than just a snug fit when you're putting it under the Bumbo - you have to actually use a bit of force to get it attached.
All of this shows careful and clever design techniques used, and it certainly pays off with the use. Our son is coming up to a year, but was two months, so we're operating at just under 10 months of development age. The Bumbo is only recommended for use once your baby can hold its own head, and we're well into this stage, but as our son is still relatively small, there's plenty of room in the Bumbo for him. The tray allows for more interactivity as opposed to the Bumbo on its own, which is just a seat in all honesty. The tray does have the added bonus of a platform for play, which when your child is developing at such a fast rate, is brilliant. The tray has a large enough area that there can be a few things on it and our son can play with one or two things while the others just sit there, although I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that his favourite thing to do is to throw most things off and then look at me accusingly as if it's my fault that there's nothing left on there to play with!
It's secure as well. As my son gets older and more aware of the use of his hands, he grabs the edge of the tray and pulls, but the way it's on very securely without the need for locks or tags means that he won't pull it off. Again, his weight in the Bumbo adds to this element.
This is the official Bumbo tray, and will come with a Bumbo symbol on the front at the base and a couple of Bumbo details in print on the underside of the tray. Apparently there are copies or not official Bumbo created versions of this. I wouldn't like to risk getting one of these instead as the dimensions are essential to the function of this accessory. High quality product at a decent price. As I said, we were lucky enough to acquire a perfect condition one for a really low price, but this price reflects the quality. Recommended.
Summary: Excellent play tray for the Bumbo
