After the birth of my daughter, the gorgeous and currently snoozing Eva Rose, I had quite a time of it with the whole breastfeeding milarky. Now firstly, for all you soon to be mums out there, don't believe anyone who says breastfeeding doesn't hurt. To begin with, maybe for a week, maybe for two, you will have some discomfort as your nipples get used to being food distributors for the duration. Getting your baby latched on properly, and positioning them so that you back isn't breaking will also help, but if you do nothing else, get a tube of this and carry it around with you wherever you go once baby has arrived.

What is it?
Well despite being incredibly hard to pronounce, and rather difficult to find in shops (try a big Boots store, the smaller ones don't seen to stock it), it is literally, or at least was in my case, miracle cream. Made from 100% medical grade lanolin, with no additives, it is a wonderful way to soothe and protect sore nipples - it stops them from drying out and getting cracked (which is agony!) and you don't need to wipe it off before feeding. I also found it incredibly helpful to apply some before getting in the shower or bath.
It comes in a lavender coloured box, inside is the tube and you'll probably find that it will squeeze out of the tube much easier if you hold it in your hand for a moment to soften the insides.

How much?
Well this is the shocker - a 56g tube of this miracle cream will set you back a cool £10 but you don't need a lot to get a good effect. Eva is 9 weeks old today and I'm just on my second tube, and as we are both pros at the whole breastfeeding milarky, I don't need to use it quite so much. If you want to have a try without spending a fortune then ask your midwife for a sample. My lovely midwife carries little samples around with her and offered me some when she saw that the cream I was using (Kamisolan) wasn't working for me.

What does it look like?
The cream is opaque white and very thick and sticky, with a strange waxy type feel to it. It gets softer and more pliable when it's warm.

When to use and how?
When you're sore, if you have cracked nipples, if you have any sort of pain in the nippular area, get this stuff out and you'll be amazed at the difference. In the beginning, I was using it after every feed. What I also found helpful was to sit and let the air round my breast after the feed and after applying the cream. Not great if you have loads of visitors, but incredibly effective!

What I Think.
The pain of sore and cracked nipples is, in my opinion, the sole reason so many women give up breastfeeding after a week or two. Knowing the benefits of breastfeeding to our wee ones, it's really important to do everything we can to give our babies the best start in life. I know there will be other reasons women give it up, but for me, right there on day 12 I was seriously considering just holding my hands up and saying you know what? I give in! using this cream (as well as getting Eva latched on correctly) really helped me a lot to continue giving her the best start in life, and I'm really rather proud of that!

Good luck to all you new mums out there - if you need help and support in feeding your babies or advice or a chat about positions for feeding, the lovely people at NCT (The National Childbirth Trust) will be able to help you:
