Advantages: No need to wash it off before feeding, instant relief

Disadvantages: The price but it is like a mirable cream so well worth it

If you read my review on Post Natal Depression or the one on Breastfeeding, you will already know I struggled with getting breastfeeding started and as a result ended having very sore nipples. Because I couldn't get baby to latch on properly, I had cracked nipples which is as painful as it sounds.

At first I tried to relieve the pain with Vaseline but that only helped to a certain extent. I also tried the trick where you have to put a bit of breastmilk on your own nipple after a feed but that only helped slightly as well.

When my health visitor came to see me, I was in a state. A really bad one. My nipples were so inflamed I could hardly move my arms without aching. The pain was excruciating. My whole breasts became extremely sensitive and I came to dread feeding my baby and I even thought breastfeeding was harder than giving birth.
The Health visitor told me to get Lansinoh as soon as possible.

My husband went to buy some. The tube contains 56g and costs just under £10. While it seemed like a lot of money, I found it is justified as it relieved me nearly straight away. Lansinoh was created over 20 years ago by a breastfeeding mother so it seemed like a safe bet.
It is made of pure lanolin and the best thing is that you can cover your nipples with it and you don't have to wash it off before feeding baby. It is quite thick and you may have to use just a small amount and work it into something smooth before applying it. It is a bit greasy but that's not a problem if you wear breastpads as the surplus ends up on the pads not your bra.

The truth is after a week of using it, my nipples went back to normal and I only had to use it every now and then after that. I have most of the tube left over and it will still be good for our next baby so all in all I think it's a good investment.

I am so glad Health professionals recommend it so passionately as it does work.

Summary: Get Lansinoh lanolin if you're going to breasfeed and you should be fine
