Before having my baby, it was always my intention to breastfeed so I didn't really research much about formula milk. However, during the first few sleepless days (and nights!) with my newborn son, my milk supply was struggling to keep up with his demand (leading to a rather stressful time for us all!). The midwife recommended that I should try using a bit of formula milk to 'top him up' and the formula that she recommended was aptamil - stating that she believed it to be the most similar to breast milk.
We bought a carton of powder (priced £8.49) - the aptamil first range. (They also do a hungry baby formula, follow on milk from 6 months of age to support weaning and growing up/toddler milks). The side of the carton provided clear instructions of how to make the milk up and how much a baby of various ages (usually months) needs and how many times a day. I was initially worried about how complicated formula milk may be but this reassured me that it was quite simple.
As a 'top up' to breast milk, this seemed to suit my son quite well. He didn't seem to mind taking it from the bottle or be horrified by any taste difference. This helped me through those difficult days until my supply finally caught up. As my son got older, I would also use this powder for at least one feed during the day (usually the last one at night) as he seemed to be satisfied for longer with this. I also found their ready made cartons ideal for taking out with me as these were great on the go - no need to boil a kettle to mix the powder. The knowledge that the milk also contains key vitamins, a 'unique blend of GOS/FOS', LCP's and nucleotides is also very reassuring to me as a mum.
When I decided to stop breastfeeding when weaning, at 6 months, it was therefore natural to me to choose aptamil follow on milk for my son. This also suited me, and my son, very well and I am more than happy with that decision. I would definitely recommend Aptamil if you are considering formula feeding your baby. I also note that they have a 'calm' milk in their range - good for easing colic in babies. This is not a milk I have used but I think that this is a great idea, having experienced the misery that colic can cause.
