We have just had a new baby (4weeks) and also have a 2 year old. We were kindly given a plug in both ends type monitor which we used for our first and have been quite pleased with but it has obvious limitations. Therefore we decided to splash out on a new monitor. After being battered about and dropped endless times, our second hand baby monitor finally gave up working, so we had to buy a new one. All of them looked pretty good, but they were really expensive, so we opted for the Mothercare Sound Asleep monitor. You get the transmitter and the receiver and two adapters. You can either have them running on mains or put batteries in, which is handy if you're moving around the house a lot. You can just clip the receiver onto your belt etc and carry it with you.
