Mothercare Yellow Muslins
Advantages: keep their shape well, absorb greatly don't run and lots of uses
Disadvantages: Initial out lay more expensive than supermarket versions
An essential I have found whilst breastfeeding both of my sons has been a muslin cloth. I use several different brands but my favourite ones are from Mothercare. I have the yellow muslin set but they are available in several different colours including white, blue and pink. They come in a pack of six for £12.99. The cloths themselves are made from 100% cotton and are 60cm square.
I use these cloths for many different purposes including makeshift bibs, wiping up spit up, trying to cover myself to feed discreetly whilst out and a lot of other uses all of which mean that I have always one close to hand with my 20 week old son both in the house and out and about. The cloths because they are made from 100% cotton are lovely and soft to the touch and do not feel scratchy at all against either my sons skin or my own. I don't use any fabric softener with these applying the same principle as I use with towels that this makes them more absorbent and they still fell lovely and soft without the addition of softener.
The cloths themselves are a very tight weave and are a closer weave than some of the supermarket cloths I have. This I find makes them more able to cope with spills and absorb any spit up my son has when I use these as a bib. They also cope well on the days when he drools due to teething and I find when at how that it is easy to just use one of these to wipe him often. The close weave of them also seems to help them keep their shape when they are washed and rather than thinner versions that go out of shape. This means I am more able to make the makeshift bibs for him. I also think if you were using them as nappy cloths this keeping of shape would be more beneficial to making them into nappy cloths.
Colour wise when washing they keep their yellow colour very well and have only faded slightly. I have not noticed any running of the colour when washing them with some lighter colours either.
They last very well and I am still using a pack I had with my first son a couple of years ago, so they do last well without getting worn or frayed.
They are a nice large size which I find means I can drape one easily over my shoulder to cover myself and a bit of my son to feed discreetly whilst out and the lack of shrinking in the washing means they keep their large size better than cheaper versions I have.
I would definitely recommend these muslin cloths to other mums they are great for using for bibs, mopping up baby spills. They are more absorbent I find than cheaper supermarket ones and keep their shape better. A full five stars from me.
Summary: A great cloth for keeping to hand when breastfeeding that washes and absorbs well
