Advantages: Great under the potty when a child is first learning to use one

Disadvantages: Expensive, pointless for small babies

I was sent a free sample of a Pampers Care Mat when they first came out, and must admit I thought they were pointless and rather a waste of money. My daughter was quite small, and out of the suggested uses the only two that seemed relevant to me were to use the mat as a travel changing mat, or put it on furniture when the baby was without a nappy. I had two travel changing mats that had come with bags, and a large plastic backed mat for using during 'no-nappy' time, so didn't think I would use the Pampers mats. I put the free sample in the cupboard, unopened. Now my daughter is two, and has been using a potty for a couple of months. Just before I started potty training, I found the sample care mat when searching for something else and had another look at it. Not only did I find a couple of uses for the free mat, I went out and brought a whole packet of them.

The first thing I used them for was to put one under the potty. Each mat is a square of absorbent materials with a plastic backing. Obviously, when she was just starting to use the potty, accidents did happen, (and quite often!). Even now we have the odd splash. The mat made sure the 'accident' didn't soak through onto the carpet, making
cleaning up a lot easier. Once it is wet, you just roll the mat up, and throw it away. They are also useful if my daughter uses the potty in our bathroom, which has a wooden floor. Without one when she sits down, the potty was sliding away from her on the floor. This was quite off putting for her. However, the mat keeps the potty still as she sits, and she feels more secure.

The second use for the care mats has come more recently. She is now dry during the day, but when she has a nap it's still too early to expect her to be dry. I put a care mat under her when she is asleep, and if she has an accident the sofa or her bed doesn't get wet. When this has happened I have been really impressed with the way the mat deals with
the accident. It works just like a nappy, soaking it in and keeping it away from her skin. In fact, the last time it happened the only way I knew she had wet herself was because the mat was heavy when I took it off the sofa. When I touch her, her trousers and underwear were almost dry.

Later on when she is becoming dry through the night, a care mat can be put between the sheet and the mattress, giving the mattress added protection in case an accident occurs.

Care mats come into two sizes-normal, (60cmx60cm) in packs of 12 or large (80mx80cm), which are in packs of 7. I am using the normal size and that seems more than big enough.

I'm glad I had another look at Pampers care mats. They have certainly made potty training a bit cleaner and easier for me and my daughter, (but only a bit!). However, they are expensive and when I have another newborn baby I still don't think I would bother with them, as there are other better, (cheaper), things to use for younger babies.
