I'm reviewing our Hello Kitty bowl.
It was bought in Poundworld last summer.
***WHY WE BOUGHT THIS ***
I bought this for little Holly to use .
Holly spotted this in Poundworld and set her heart on it .I thought it rather too light to use for children, but reckoned it would be OK for cold summer foods and treats if for nothing else.
It cost just £1 ,so wasn't going to break the bank.
This is a cute little item actually, and because it is melamine it is sturdy and I knew it was likely to take the occasional bounce off the floor that little children do so well.
It is about 7" (17cms)in diameter, but because it has a broad rim the actual well that holds the food is only around 5"(13cms) in diameter.
There was a choice of these as regards pattern, with a couple of different Hello Kitty poses, but Holly had her heart set on this one which is quite simplistic, with just the Hello Kitty head in the well of the bowl and the words Hello Kitty interspersed with flowers around the rim.
This is NOT suitable for use in microwave ovens and is NOT dish washer safe .
The pattern is embedded into the melamine rather than being just barely on the surface as some of these dishes can be.
We used this a lot in the summer for ice cream and cold lunches and it has had lots of abuse from dropping and getting battered around in play in the garden.
I have served baked beans in it because I just warm those slightly for the children rather than serve them hot ,and the dish hasn't retained any staining . But I prefer not to use this for hot food like soups as I'm very aware that it is not the most stable of dishes because of the wide rim .
This has endured well and while it has a few slight scratches from over enthusiastic spooning of ice cream etc it actually still looks quite good and I expect to get a lot more use from it.
It takes lots of abuse, washes nicely and retains it's pretty pattern really well .
The well of the dish, at just 5" in diameter, might seem small, but in my opinion it is perfect for childrens portions .
Would I recommend it ? Yes, but I would point out that, due to it's lightness and instability, usage for hot foods would need supervision.
Regarding stars, again the light weight of the dish is a slight concern in some ways , but for cooler foods it is fine and very attractive to children . And Holly loves it .
So I think 4 stars is fair.
Thank you for reading ~~~myloh.
Hello Kitty Bowl
~~ A little background story: why I bought this item ~~
Our three year old daughter has a wide array of character utensils and plastic crockery, amongst which is this adorable Hello Kitty bowl. I bought this several days after discovering her interest in Hello Kitty (AKA HK) five or six months ago. At the time, I was unsure if this was simply a passing phase, but I was hopeful that her interest in this feline character would last at least a few months.
Why such an obscure wish? Millie is a fluent French speaker (despite neither us being so). I discovered that she was familiar with HK when she was playing with an imaginary friend, speaking French and then turned to me and said "......'ello kee-ty....that's how you say Hello Kitty in French". Imagine this for a moment. My native (American) English speaker speaking English with a perfect "French speaker talking-in-English" accent.
Of course now my heart melts whenever I see a Hello Kitty item. And as I write this review I have a happy smile on my face.
~~ This item & our opinions ~~
I'm pleased to say that this bowl is usually sold as-is, without any packaging. I wish that I could remember where I purchased it from - it was either one of the local large supermarkets, or a pound type of shop. I know that I didn't pay more than £1.25 for it.
This BPA-free plastic bowl feels lighter than I expected for its size of 9cm x 4cm. Made in China, it is basically a white bowl with a pink edge/lip and a picture of Hello Kitty on the inside bottom. HK is on a background of rose-pink, which makes her all-white features stand out nicely.
The edge of the bowl has the words "Hello Kitty" printed in block capitals six times around the edge. The illustration and print remain sharp despite much use over the months. Millie likes to have HK facing her as she eats, and is occasionally distracted by the writing while she is eating.
This bowl is usually frequently used at breakfast time for cereal and at other times as an appropriately-sized vessel for fruit salad or ice-cream. I cannot recall that Millie has ever knocked over this bowl while eating from it. This bowl is shallower than most of her other character bowls, and I find that she regularly needs a top-up or two of her breakfast cereal in the morning. This is different to her other bowls. (Three bowls of cereal I hear you say? Nearly four, she finally weighs 32lb after 18 months of weighing 30lb. That's a whole other story!)
As you can tell, our daughter is the usual user of this bowl. However as it is offer within easy reach drying on the sideboard, I have been known to choose it for my daytime snacks such as sultanas and crisps although not at the same time. It is too lightweight for my use and I am always worried that I might knock it over.
This Hello Kitty bowl is low maintenance. It is not suitable for washing in the dishwasher. I always wash it by hand with a soft dish sponge, in the hope of preserving the bowl's original colours and reducing the chance of it becoming scratched.
~~ Recommended? ~~
This bowl comes recommended by both my daughter and I.
One star deducted for being shallower than its counterparts.
My daughter really likes Hello Kitty and will always comment when she sees something in the shop which has the logo on. I am more likely to buy her something if it useful so this is something I was happy to buy her. I bought this when she was 3.
---About the product:
The Hello Kitty bowl is produced by Sanio and is made from a thick durable plastic. The bowl is mainly white with a pink rim with Hello Kitty written in a darker pink colour with yellow flowers. The middle of the bowl has a picture of Hello Kitty's face with her paws up by her face. She is wearing her traditional red bow on her ear. The back of the bowl says that it is not suitable for microwaves and unsuitable for dishwashers. The bowl is approximately 17cm in diameter and the hole is approximately 14cm. The depth of the bowl is about 5cm.
---Using the product:
My daughter has been using this product a couple of times a week since we bought it and it has lasted us really well. It is a good size for her as it is not as big as an adult bowl so she doesn't get a full sized portion, but it is bigger than the baby sized ones which you can't fit anything in. My daughter has used it for cereals and items like baked beans or pasta in tomato sauce and it has not become stained at all. We have often been too lazy to wash it by hand and it has often ended up in the dishwasher on the top shelf and does not show any ill effects. After about 8 months, it is still in good condition and is still being used regularly.
I have been really pleased with this bowl. We bought it in Home Bargains for the great price of £1.00 and it has been worth that for the amount of use we have had from it. Some cheaper ones we have used have had the 'sticker' peel off from the bottom of the bowl, but this one seems to be much better quality. My daughter is happy with it as it has Hello Kitty on it and that means she wants to eat her food so she can see the picture. I am happy with the size of it as well and would happily buy another the same again.
Regardless of what the item is, if my little girl sees something with Hello Kitty on, she immediately asks for it and when we spotted these in Home Bargains, it was no different.
The bowl measures around 9cm wide and around 4cm deep, I do think that the bowl is a little on the small side (depth wise), especially if I was to use for breakfast or for a main meal, I tend to use mine for puddings such as chopped fruit or ice cream or for finger food if we are having a picnic. The bowl is quite pretty, it has a lip all the way around which is decorated in pink with Hello Kitty in white writing, the lip measures around 1cm which makes it easier for Lauren to hold the bowl if she is trying to scoop food out with her cutlery. In the middle of the bowl is a nice big picture of Kitty.
As stated earlier, I brought mine from Home Bargains at a cost of 79p, along with a drinks tumbler and a couple of plates in the same range all priced at £1 or less. There are lots of similar versions available on the market from places such as Boots or Debenhams but as you can imagine, these attract a slightly higher price tag (of up to £5) so I think I got quite a bargain here. Having looked online, this is not available to purchase but I did notice they were still available in store last week when I went in.
It is worth noting that the bowl is not microwave safe or suitable for washing in the dishwasher, although because I am a bit on the lazy side, I have popped on the top shelf of my dishwasher several times and haven't experienced any problems such as colour fading, cracking etc. We have used the bowl several times outside when having a picnic or a BBQ and the bowl has been dropped a couple of times, yet it is still in excellent condition.
In my opinion, the bowl would be suitable for younger children too, it is lightweight and small so ideal when starting the weaning process and because my daughter us using this and she is nearly 6, I would say this appeals to a wide range of children.
Although I commented earlier that I thought the bowl was a little small, when I compare to all the other plastic bowls I have purchased in the past, it is no different so I don't feel that I would reduce the number of stars I would give the bowl and overall, I would recommend this and give 5 out of 5 stars.
Thanks for reading.
This Hello Kitty bowl is the last item in Sanrio's range of children's meal-time products we bought. Like other items in the same range, the bowl was bought from Home Bargains and is currently sold out on their website.
First off, the bowl is made from scratch resistant plastic, great for baby cutlery as doesn't display the ear-piercing screech of traditional plates and bowls do against tiny metal implements.
There is no information given about the plastic being BPA free or microwave safe, but in general Sanrio's products are BPA free and NOT microwave safe. It would be great if the bowl had some packaging that would mention this.
The bowl is not dishwasher or steriliser safe either. To wash, warm soapy water is perfectly fine, but harsh scrubbing may remove the pattern on the bowl.
The pattern is probably the highlight for kids. There are two designs available, the one pictured above with Kitty peeping out of the center, and another with Kitty buried in a pile of red and pink bows. Both are the same price and have matching items, such as a cup and plate, which we own.
The bowl is not terrifically deep or wide, I'd say 10cm in diameter and able to hold a few large table spoons of food, but of course you can always refill it. It is about an average size as baby food products we have experienced go. So far, we have had no staining of the plastic and despite being dropped on the floor a few times, the bowl looks as good as new.
Obviously, food equipment like this is only suitable for children who are eating by themselves. If your child is weaned using the baby led method, this can be as early as six months. However, the baby led weaning website (http://www.babyledweaning.com/) suggests not using bowls when first introducing food to infants -- so this item is likely more useful for infants between 10-18 months and above.
My niece is 19 months and uses this pretty well for her age. She likes Hello Kitty but the bowl is not stimulating enough to distract her from eating. It is light enough for her to pick up, but this often means she dumps food on herself, but this is better than her hurting herself with a heavier bowl. In general, she is getting better at it and her other meal-time utensils, which is to say, less food fights happen. I would say this bowl, along with other items in the set, would be very handy for travelling or at a picnic, as they are so light and easy to clean.
We bought this for £1.50 at Home Bargains, but I have seen the same shop in other areas of the country selling them for as little as 99p and as much as £3. Shop around, as they are definitely worth buying, for a fun and easy way to help your little one enjoy their meal.
