When I was pregnant the plan was to breast feed as there were and are more advantages than bottle feeding. One of the main factors was that breastfeeding was free and bottle feeding was costly at approx £5-6 a tin of formula and the cost of bottles, steriliser and teat. Anyway, my delivery didn't go according to plan and I suffered a 3rd degree tear and lost 1.5 litres of blood. As such I was rushed into theatre to be stitched up and when I came out of theatre I had 3 blood transfusions and was very anemic. I breastfed both my babies and although I am an advocate for breast is best and all that, also truly believe that what is most important is that you and your baby are happy and content. I struggled both times breastfeeding and throughout my first pregnancy desperately wanted to breastfeed and had it drummed into me by my midewife that it was the right thing to do. For a new mum or mum to be this is one of the biggest issues because everyone has a theory and will tell you what you should be doing for your baby and whilst peoples experiences and insights can be very useful I think all new mums should follow their own instincts when it comes to the breastfeeding debate-after all it is your body and your baby. I find that a lot of people automatically expect you to want to and be able to breastfeed and sometimes that is not the case.Also a lot of parents feel slightly uncomfortable feeding in public which contributes to not wanting to nurse their babies.
