They clip together easily first time, this might not be so important for an adult but for a young exploring mind being able to do it for themselves will encourage the child onto exploring more complicated, larger track layouts. I have just bought this to give to my two year old at Christmas. Normally I wouldn't have looked at it twice as it's very expensive (£89.99), but my local toy shop was closing down and I managed to snap it up for £44.00 - bargain! It comprises of a very large Thomas (big enough to sit on, but you're supposed to discourage your child from doing so - yeah right) which has railway tracks running through it. So essentially Thomas is the tunnel. It has two sets of track, double width and single width, and it has risers so that the track doesn't have to sit flat to the floor.
