Advantages: Easy for little hands to hold, inexpensive, has flip up spout, different colours
Disadvantages: Isn't non spill and leaks a lot, spurts when replacing the lid, hard spout
The Tommee Tippee first cup is suitable for babies and children from 4 months of age and was my daughters very first cup.
The cups are quite small and have a handle on either side. They have 'Tommee Tippee' written on the front and a plastic lid on the top. The lids have a flip up spout built in.
They come in a range of different colours to suit everybodys preference and gender. From what I gather the cups only used to come in a few different colours but there now seem to be more on the market. Colours include orange, blue, yellow, pink and green.
They look quite simple but attractive.
The advantages of this cup are:
- It is very easy for little hands to hold and lift up.
- It is also small, light and compact which means it's handy for travelling with.
- The spout flips up and down for when the cup is not in use which is very useful to help avoid spillages and is hygienic.
- The cup is made from plastic which can be used in sterilisers and
dishwashers. It is very easy to clean and wipe down.
- The lid can be completley removed as the child gets older and can drink from an open cup whilst still keeping their hands steady with the handles.
- It has a discreet juice line which can be used to help with correct dillution levels. I personally never used this but it might come in useful for others.
- Spout is easy to drink out of and is quite hard so is good for chewing on during teething but won't break.
- The cup is available in most shops which sell baby essentials and is very affordable indeed.
The disadvantages of this cup are:
- Apparently it's 'non leak' but it isn't. There were more than a few occassions when I had a drink stained carpet, cot, sofa, car... well you get the idea. There is less chance of the cup spilling if the spout is flipped down but even then it still drips out. For me this is the cups biggest flaw, I just can't stand cups that spill and leak, it's pointless.
- The spout is supposed to be soft but it isn't, it's infact made of hard plastic. This might take some getting used to if the child has only been drinking from soft bottle teats.
- If you put the lid back up the cup (after filling it up with drink) with the spout up, it shoots out drink! After a few facefulls of juice I automatically started putting the spout down or placing my hand over the top of it whilst replacing the lid. Worse still the cup sometimes spurted when the spout was flipped up so my baby got an unexpected facefull of juice. Not nice when you're tiny.
You can usually expect to pay around £1.00-£2.00 for the Tommee Tippee first cup which isn't a bad price at all. But make sure you wash them before use as they could be full of all sorts of nasties, plus they are openly packaged so anybody could have touched them.
Overall this isn't a bad first cup but it does have a few flaws. As long as you don't expect anything too special with this cup then you should be alright.
Summary: An okay first cup.
