When I was pregnant with my daughter, although I ideally wanted to breastfeed, as a first time mum I wasn't sure how it was going to go, and as a precaution, I decided to buy some bottles as I knew that I would eventually need them anyway for expressed milk.

I decided to purchase the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Bottles because the blurb on the box said that these were the closest shape of teat to a womans breast and that the transition from breast to bottle should be easier. The shape of the teat is different because the teat extends in a dome shape much further than a normal teat so that the baby feels this against its mouth rather than cold plastic.

When my daughter was born she was incredibly sleepy (which may have something to do with the amount of pain relief I had had!) and it was difficult to get her to latch on to my breast. After two days of breast feeding training and hand expressing my milk and feeding her with a syringe(!) I knew that the ever present threat of her being taken back into hospital if her weight dropped too much was getting more and more likely, and I resigned myself to the fact that breastfeeding wasn't going to work for us, so I prepared her milk in these bottles.

Unfortunately, and maybe this was because she was quite a small baby, she was unable to get all the teat in her mouth and sealed with her lips. In addition the teats should regulate themselves depending on the suck of the baby, but the flow was far to much for my daughter. Consequently, more came out of the sides of her mouth than actually went in it. After feeding her a two ounce bottle, you would find that her bib or clothing was absolutely soaking.

I tried holding the bottle differently and the baby differently, but the results were the same. After another couple of days I gave up and went and bought some Dr Browns bottles. These were excellent and we never had a single problem with them. The Tommee Tippee bottles went in the bin!

As mentioned above, it could just be that I had a bad experience with a difficult feeder, and all children are different. I would however say to anyone who is buying bottles for the first time, that the standard type of teat has been around a long time, and there is a reason for that!

Summary: Didn't work for my daughter
