Advantages: Supposed to suit babies of all ages

Disadvantages: Teat too big

We were using the Tommee Tippee closer to nature bottles and my little boy started on the stage one teats. By 9 weeks old though he seemed to be producing quite a lot of wind and he seemed to be struggling with getting the milk out of the bottle. After a bit of research I found it was due to the fact he needed the bigger teat size as the milk was no longer comng out fast enough for him.

So I headed out to the shops and found that for 2 teats I was looking at paying around £4.50, Quite expensive I thought, espescially if in another few weeks my baby had outgrown the stage two teats. This is when I noticed the vari-flow teats and they sounded perfect. They were the same sort of price for two teats however these promised that they were suitable for babies of all ages as the harder your baby sucked on the teat the more milk came out.

I got them home and had a closer look. The first thing I noticed was that the teat was quite a bit larger then the ones I had previously been using, and on the top rather then just a hole was a cross slit instead I guessed this opened up more the harder the baby sucked allowing more milk to flow through.

I sterilised the teats and then tried them on my boys next feed. This is where it all went wrong. Firstly my baby seemed confused as to why the teat was bigger then it was before and it was as though he struggled to keep it in his mouth. He then struggled sucking the teat and as he got used to it, it seemed the milk was just flowing out to fast for him as he was gagging and crying uncontrollably! I tried the teat a few more times to see if he just needed time to get used to it but he didn't. Each time he seemed to get frustrated and miserable.

I ended up back at the shop buying the stage two teats and one using these my baby was fine! He drank much better from this and was a lot more content. Because of this I would defiantly NOT recommend this teat!

Summary: Don't bother with vari-flow!
