Although I was planning on breastfeeding my daughter, I bought this steriliser when I was pregnant in anticipation of expressing milk occasionally so her Daddy could feed her it through bottles. Obviously with planning to use bottles we had to buy a sterilising to keep them clean and sterile. Our microwave is quite compact so we had to look for a small steriliser in order for it to fit in. I didn't want to spend a huge amount of money on an electric steriliser when it wouldn't be used a great deal.
I bought this from my local Morrison's store for a bargainous £10. They tend to retail anywhere between £10 and £25 and can be found in most stores that sell baby related items.
The steriliser is 27cm wide and 15cm high. It comes in 3 parts - It has a white plastic base, a clear lid and a white plastic insert which sits in the base. The insert has raised parts in it to prop teats on if you are using tommee tippee bottles. The bottles we used weren't tommee tippee ones and they didn't fit on the part you're meant to prop teats on however they did fit in elsewhere in the steriliser so this wasn't a problem.
I expressed milk more than I anticipated so regularly used the steriliser to sterilise my milk storage bottles. It could fit 8 of my medela storage bottles in at a time, including the lids. It was also big enough to be able to fit in my breast pump parts. If you were using tommee tippee bottles it would fit 4 of them in at a time.
The design of the steriliser is very simple. I like that there's nothing on it that could really break. The lid simply pushes into place. All you need to do is add 200ml of water before you put it in the microwave for 8 minutes. Because of the simplicity, I have no doubt that it will last for my next baby and I wouldn't consider buying any other type of steriliser when this one works so well.
The only problem I have found with the steriliser is that condensation gathers on the inside of the lid so that when you take the lid off it drips all over my kitchen counters. I try and solve this issue by whipping the lid off and flipping the lid upside down quickly to try and catch the drips and this usually works.
My Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Steriliser was a panic purchase I made after I discovered that my original steriliser, a Mothercare branded item, wouldn't fit into my microwave. It was the first one I saw in Tesco and although relatively pricey at £26.99 I knew that it's compact design would make it an easy fit back home so I parted with my cash and was able to start sterilising our newborn's bottles.
This is a microwave steriliser which has the capacity to hold and sterilise 4 nursing bottles as well as their teats and lids. It's circular in design, quite squat in height measuring a microwave-friendly 28cm and is made from tough, durable plastic. It has a transparent cover which clicks firmly into place onto the base and weighs around 1 kilogram so is easy to pick up and transport around. Around 200ml of water needs to be added to the base of the steriliser before it is put to work and once you have separated the teats and covers from your bottles they simply sit in place and are sterilised by the water that is heated up by the power of your microwave. Depending on the wattage of your microwave oven you can sterilise 4 bottles in around 4-8 minutes and whilst the lid of steriliser is left in place your bottles will remain sterilised for 24 hours.
I like the simplicity of the steriliser's design, it's easy to use and does the job it was designed to do. Because my son is exclusively bottle-fed and is on 3-4 hourly feeds this steriliser gets used a few times every day and has proven itself to be a reliable and user-friendly item which I suspect will last for a very long time. The base of the steriliser has a series of vents and holes which allow the steam from the hot water to get to every part of my sons bottles and teats and I trust the Tommee Tippee brand name. It's supposed to be a universal steriliser which should hold any branded nursing bottles, both sizes of the TT bottles fit easily into mine (the 150ml and 260ml) although I do think that the longer-shaped bottles available to buy probably won't fit so I'd be cautious about recommending this if you use anything bigger than a 260ml bottle although to be fair if you are using the larger bottles the chances are your baby is over 12 months old and their bottles probably don't need sterilising any more.
The "Closer to Nature" Steriliser is sold with a small, 150ml CTN bottle as well as a Tommee Tippee branded dummy and set of white tongs which I thought was a nice touch and although I thought it was rather expensive I do have to admit to being impressed with how it performs. The only word of caution I would give with this steriliser is that it does get very, very hot inside (obviously) and you should allow a good 3-5 minutes for it to cool a little before removing the lid. Be aware that condensation does also form on the lid too which can be a bit of a pain when it ends up all over a kitchen worktop so you will have a little bit of clean up to do if you can't wait for it to evaporate so the best approach with this steriliser is to be organised and give yourself enough time before baby needs a clean bottle, which is easier said than done as any parent, especially new ones will know.
All in all there is very little for me to criticise with this steriliser and it makes a job that has to be done a little bit easier. You can simply load the base with what needs sterilising, bung it in the microwave, set the timer and leave it to do its magic and once finished you have freshly sterilised bottles that are completely baby-safe. You should find that it fits into all microwaves, even the budget-price smaller ones that supermarkets sell (it fits easily into my £32 Tesco branded one without any problems) so using it shouldn't cause you any problems whatsoever and for the amount of use it gets I consider mine to be one of the best purchases I made for our new baby.
As mentioned at the start of this review I paid £26.99 instore at Tesco for my Tommee Tippee Steriliser but it can be found cheaper online with amazon selling it for £17.99 at the time of me writing this although be aware that amazon's price does fluctuate as I've seen it recently for just £9.99 which has to be a bargain by anyone's standard. Even at full price I do think it's a great buy, if you want a microwave steriliser then I would definitely recommend this one from Tommee Tippee and from me it gets a perfect 5 star rating as its proven itself to be reliable, robust and efficient. It makes a job that has to be done that little bit easier and for me as a new parent that can only be a good thing, thanks for reading my review.
