As a paranoid first timer when my first daughter went onto solids, I was forever checking the temperature of the food to make sure it wasn;t too hot or too cold etc. Then I bought the tommy tippee heat sensitive spoon with a dish and lid. You simply put the spoon into the food and the spoon changes colour according to how hot the food is. If the spoon stays red, then it is too cold, if it goes bright yellow it's too hot. They are also made of durable plastic - we've had ours for over 12 months now and it's been dropped countless times and it's still perfectly fine. The handy storage lid means you can make food up if you're going out and not worry about it sloshing around everywhere. They are pricey though - I paid just over £3 for mine from a bargain shop, but prices vary depending on where you go.
