Advantages: Tells you if food is too warm.
Disadvantages: none.
I went to the Baby Show at the SSCC Glasgow yesterday and only bought two things! How strange! One of the things i bought was these weaning spoons from the Tommee Tippee stall.
The spoons came in a special offer, buy a magic gripper mat and set of 4 weaning bowls and get the spoons free! So i paid £10 for all three things. Bargin!
Anyway the spoons.
The pack contains four spoons that are heat sensing. There was a couple of different coloured packs to choose from, having girls i opted for the spoons that were pink and lilac.
Each spoon is made of two parts. The handle is the coloured part, in my case two are pink and two are lilac. This part is made of hard, smooth plastic and extends down the handle. The other part with is the spoon bit itself is red, they are all red no matter what colour you pick. This is made of a soft flexable rubber that will change colour. The spoon head is narrow, suitable for young babies of 4 months + who have smaller mouths. The rubber is soft and baby gum friendly, i also find it good if baby has teeth, there is no fear of chipping or knocking baby's teeth like a metal spoon might.
Changing colour.
The spoon is designed to change from red to yellow if it is subjected to heat that could hurt baby's mouth. This is so useful when you start weaning and its very easy to use.
Once you have heated the food either by warm water or microwave put the spoon in and stir the food well, this is just to make sure there is no heat spots that microwaving might make. Once you've stirred well take the spoon out and have a look. If the spoon is still red you can feel confident the food is at a safe temerature for baby, if it has changed even slighly i would wait for a while to let it cool.
Overall
I've not seen these about much so if you do see them they are worth the buy. At the Baby Show the spoons on there own were priced at £3.00 but i'm not sure how much a shop would charge.
They are easy for baby to hold when she gets to that stage and are microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe.

- 06/03/06 These sound great - I seem to remember a free spoon coming with rice krispies I think it was, years ago and it changed colour when you put it in warm milk. Only problem was they had strange shaped twisty handles so it was a nightmare to hold, lol. Krispies went everywhere. Belinda |
