Advantages: Good for panicy parents, small babies and learning difficulties

Disadvantages: not deep enough for weaning or toddlers

My opinion of tomee timpee heat changing spoons is that is an expensive gimmick marketed at panicky first time parents.
The spoon cost about £2.50 for a pack of six in most baby related shops but they can be found much cheaper over the internet.

My job involves working with many families with young children and we have had a few interested discussions about these spoon. The main concern from parents as that they need to learn to trust there judgement and not a spoon to tell them what is right for there baby. I however do think these spoons could have a place assisting children with learning difficulties the concept of hot and cold foods and for parent who are suffering difficulties judging temperature.

The spoons come in a yellow and red colour. The red of the spoon stays red as long as the spoon is cold but once something hot has encountered the spoon it turns to yellow. The spoon then gradually changes back to red when the food is cool enough to eat. This spoon does take a very long time to change back to red though! Therefore, the food maybe to cold by the time it has changed back.

Tommie tipee spoons are great for children learning to feed themselves and young babies that are weaning as the spoon only holds a little bit of food and is quite shallow so the baby can suck the food off easily. The spoons are very lightweight and the material they are made of is quite soft on the baby's gums. The handle is small and easy to grip for little hands.

The problems I have found with these spoons seem to occur when the child is that bit older and they are feeding themselves as the spoon is not deep enough for them to get enough food on there to allow for losing some on the way to the mouth and leaving some for them to eat at this point we had to change to a deeper style spoon. The food we had the most difficulty with was smooth yogurt (especially when the child is eating slow ant the room is warm when the yogurt gets thinner and thinner.) which seemed to vanish off the spoon very easily. The cup part of the spoon did not seem deep enough to hold yogurt.

Overall, if you cannot trust yourself to tell when the food is too hot these are good. (However, to be honest judging temperatures is important and you should try to learn) These spoons are great for young babies but they are not deep enough for older children so would need replacing when weaning.

Summary: Colour changing gimick but it might work for some
