Advantages: Nice spoon for weaning, extra reassurance

Disadvantages: Can't rely on it

When purchasing weaning equipment late last year, I came across these Heat Sensing spoons on Amazon.co.uk and thought that they sounded like a really good idea. As they are weaning spoons, they have a soft tip which is flexible and therefore great for scooping the very last bit of puree out of a container and also means that they are nice and soft against your baby's mouth.

The spoons come in packs of 6, with two colourways available - pink and red or blue and red, with the tips of the spoons turning yellow if the food is too hot. These spoons are suitable for use from 4 months onwards. The packaging also states that they are dishwasher safe and suitable for all forms of sterilisation.

They have been awarded the 'Best Buy' and 'Best Value' award by Prima Baby and Pregnancy magazine, so come highly recommended.

Personally I do like these spoons and they do work, but seeing as I always test the heat of the food myself first before giving it to my baby, I'm not sure if there is much point to the product. I wouldn't like to rely on a spoon to tell me if the food is too hot and so if you are going to check yourself anyway, are these spoons a bit of a gimmick? I find that they change colour quickly when the food is too hot which is great, but it does take a long time for them to return to their normal colour even if the food has cooled down sufficiently meaning that the food is cold before the spoon tells you it's okay to feed to your child. What I tend to do is remove the spoon from the food container, wait for it to return to it's original colour and then put the spoon back into the food to get a true idea of if it's too hot, as this tends to work, but is a bit of a faff when you can just test it yourself!

Another minor complaint is that if the food is too hot, the tip of the spoon turns a yellowy orange colour. The problem being that a lot of first baby foods are in fact yellowy orange, so it can be difficult to tell at first glance if it's the spoon that is yellow or the puree coating it!

In conclusion, I would probably buy these again as I like the feel of the spoons and the heat sensing idea does give a bit of extra reassurance. However I wouldn't buy these if you are going to rely on the spoon alone, as you will still need to test the food yourself first before serving to your baby.

Unfortunately Amazon do not appear to sell these spoons anymore, but you should be able to find them in large supermarkets.

Summary: A nice idea, but could work better...
