Advantages: Practical to use
Disadvantages: None for me
As a new parent I was worried about basically everything to do with my children and now after four I have learned to calm down a little. I do still like products that give me a little peace of mind in knowing my children are ok so when we began weaning my son on to solids at 4 months old we brought a pack of these spoons.
They promise to indicate when food is too hot for little one to have by changing colour. One thing I like about these weaning spoons is the design itself. Rather than have a large end to pile food up on it is slimmer and smaller than other brands of baby spoons I have used. This means there is no overloading of the spoon by mummy or daddy allowing the perfect amount to reach little one while also making it less messy. Of course these spoons are better for the first stage of weaning when the food is still soft as I find the spoon head to be too small for my children to use as they grow up and begin eating large more solid foods.
The soft plastic is both comfy to hold but also useful for teething little ones. I always give my children a spoon for them self when feeding them as otherwise I find they fight me for the one I am using to actually feed them. Not only does this work well but it also means they can have a little chew on the spoon to ease the pain of teething in between aeroplanes worth of food reaching their moth. This really does make feeding time less stressful and I find it works really well. The spoon is a fair size meaning you can hold it comfortably and the soft handle provides a great surface to grip while using them.
The spoons are very easy to clean and come up great. I do tend to put them in my steriliser along with bottles just to make sure they are extra clean. I was not sure if they were able to go in as they are made of a soft plastic but I have never had any problems with them by doing this. They are dishwasher safe but not owning one I could not tell you how well they fair I find in the steriliser they are perfect me know they are clean and they do not lose any colour at all.
The bright colours of the spoons help keep little one interested in feeding time making it seem a little more appealing. There are a number of different colours you can purchase but they all have a red spoon head that changes to an orange colour if the food is too warm. They do have extra long arms on the spoon so that it can reach in to pots and jars of food which is helpful for pulling every last bit out of them to go in a bowl.
Now for the special feature of these spoons, they change colour from red to an orangey colour if the food is too hot. Although this is a handy feature it rarely ever gets used by our household. I tend to warm my little ones food up in warm water before putting it in the bowl as I do not often use my microwave to heat food up even for us. This means I have only ever seen the colour change once and that was when we were visiting my dad we heated it in the microwave for convenience and upon mixing the food it was too warm and the colour did change to a deep orange colour. It is a very noticeable colour change so there are no way you could not notice the difference meaning it is a great way to tell if the food is too hot. I think it is a great idea and very useful to anyone that heats their child's food up using a microwave. However if you are like me and only heat food up in warm water that does not mean they are in useable as of course they work really well as a feeding spoon anyway.
I would recommend these spoons as they are useful as general feeding spoons but also have the added addition of a heat sensor. They would be perfect for any parent weaning their child and provide a little extra peace of mind. They are not expensive and retail around the same price as other weaning spoons we own. We purchased ours from Asda in the baby even reduced to just £2 for a pack of three of the spoons.
Summary: A useful weaning spoon
