Advantages: easy to use, reduce spills, fits first cup, can see what's happening inside cup

Disadvantages: not widely available, pricey online

These are clear circular lids which fit inside the Tommy Tippee First Cup which have a small hole in with the goal of encouraging rim drinking without causing too much mess. I got mine from the oral health experts with a cup and two spouted lids for £1.50 but I believe this was reduced. They are available from the Tommy Tippee website in packs of 2 for £1.99. I haven't seen them in any high street stores.

I decided to use these for when I wanted my son to take his milk from a cup and take quantity rather than focusing on acquiring a skill for now. He was drinking from the spout but not much and quite slowly.

The lid is clear which means that the child (and parent can see the fluid level. The fluid flows easily out of the hole and onto the rim surface for the child to drink from. My son drank from cups when he was newborn due to weight problems and has found drinking from this really easy. It provides just the right amount of fluid to be lapped up, and doesn't provide too much if the cup is tipped too far up. The cup still does spill and can spill quite a quantity if it is left tipped up on the wrong side, but doesn't spill much if it is waved around/ tipped up on most sides etc. Unfortunately though, if a baby was using this themselves, they would have to pick it up the right way to get any milk or would be frustrated!

For us it has worked well. We didn't want to introduce a bottle at 5 months, and my son can take a quantity of milk using these which he wasn't able to using a spout so we can use it to feed him if I'm not about.

Summary: well worthwhile if you're using Tommy Tippee cups
