Advantages: Easy to hold, cheap

Disadvantages: Can break if put in steam steriliser

I have recently started weaning my 5 month old son, in my Annabel Karmel book it advises that I should start to introduce a cup to him as soon as possible, to get him used to drinking water out of a cup rather than a bottle.

Whilst in Sainsburys I spotted the Tommee Tippee tip it up first cup. I decided to choose this one as it is a free flow spout, so the water pours straight out of it rather than the baby having to suck on the spout to release the water.

The cup I chose cost £1.49 and is red in colour; they do a variety of other colours, including blue, yellow, green and orange. The cup itself is plastic and has a handle on each side of the cup for the baby to hold onto. It has a removable lid with a spout on that clicks into place. The spout itself folds up and down and is stiff enough so that the baby won't be able to flip up the spout by himself and spill water everywhere!! The cup has measuring lines on the side so you can clearly see how much water you put into the cup; it holds a maximum of 190ml of water or juice. There is also a handy measure that tells you how much water to put in to a measure of juice, so that you know the juice won't be too strong for your baby.

I wash the cup out each morning and then part fill it with some cooled, boiled water for my son, he then uses the cup throughout the day. I must say at the moment he isnt drinking a great deal out of the cup, it is more just a case of him getting used to handing the cup and getting used to the taste of water rather than milk!

As soon as I introduced the cup to Rhys, he immediately made a grab for the handles; they are just the right size for a small baby's hands and can easily be held. He had a little trouble guiding the cup to his mouth and it ended up his nose a few times!!! But once I helped him guide the cup he seems to have grasped the concept of what he is meant to do with it! As the spout is free flowing, this means that as soon as he tips up the cup, water goes into his mouth, so when first introducing it I would advise to keep a close eye on your little one as there can be water everywhere!! The first time Rhys drunk from it he got very excited and proceeded to wave his arms around whilst still holding the cup, therefore water went everywhere, but I didn't mind too much!!

One bad comment about this cup, the first time I used it, I put it in my steam sterilizer to ensure it was thoroughly cleaned. When I came to use it the next day the lid kept popping off the top of the cup as if it had changed shape in the sterilizer and would not stay in place no matter what I tried. I checked the packaging first and it did say that the cup is safe to sterilize, but maybe it isnt safe in a steam sterilizer. I then had to go out and buy a new one and throw the old one away, but as it is so cheap and it was probably my fault it broke, I really didn't mind. Needless to say, I just wash the cup in warm, soapy water now!!

Summary: A great first cup.

Strange, I steam sterilize mine and they are fine.
