Brabantia Steel Tea Coffee & Sugar Canisters
by lak11 BRABANTIA TEA, COFFEE and SUGAR STORAGE CANISTERS Along with my new kitchen units and worktops, there just had to be new accessories to add the finishing touches. I have owned several home ware products from the manufacturer Brabantia for years and have now added some new ones. I consider Brabantia to be a good reliable ... make and can usually find something I want from within their attractive ranges. For the kitchen I usually try to buy matching, or at least as close to ass possible, products as I think this makes everything look smart. I knew that I wanted to buy a biscuit barrel and matching storage canisters for tea, coffee and sugar; in fact I had owned these products in a matt steel colour for over ten years and had been pleased with these products longevity. I now wanted new as the undersides had rusted slightly and this would mean that they would spoil the new surfaces in my kitchen and also generally not look quite as good as something brand new. I looked on-line and saw the design I wanted but didn't buy from the internet as I like to look around in several stores first. I also noticed that these canisters are now made with a special coating to stop them rusting. I eventually purchased the canisters from an Ilford (Essex) department store called Bodgers, but unfortunately they didn't have the biscuit barrel in stock and so, I bought the matching biscuit barrel from another store at a later date. APPEARANCE This set consists of three round storage canisters which are matt steel in colour and they are completed with black plastic lids. They are made of 'corrosion resistant polychrome or lacquered steel plate with Galfan coating' and this material is finger print proof; a useful feature as in my home, along with most others, I would think, canisters storing tea and coffee are used frequently. Also, in my household, everyone takes sugar and so all three tins are often used. Anything that limits marking has to be a good idea. The three canisters currently sit on my kitchen windowsill. When the kitchen is completely finished, (which should be this weekend with the fitting of the flooring, all being well) I might then find them a new home. But I do think they add to the look of a modern type kitchen being sleek, and in a fashionable shade whether placed on a windowsill, shelf or worktop; however, they are too nice to be stowed away. The black lids match my new worktop and my sink. The matt steel effectively contrasts with the black worktops and brightens up the kitchen. TO USE They are lovely to use. I would say that in regards to ease of opening and closing these are an improvement on the last set. Although there wasn't a problem with my previous set of containers these open even more smoothly, which for me, having difficulties with opening some household items, makes life much easier; the more easy open and close items I have in this room then the quicker and easier it is for me to work in the kitchen. The lids click on and pull off with ease. Fitted with flavour-seal 'click' lid FEATURES As well as looking good and being made of finger print proof material these canisters are easy to clean inside. The interior is smooth plastic and feels nicer than the inside of my previous tins where the inside was metal. The lovely finish on these can be wiped clean and dried in no time at all. The containers are fitted with flavour-seal 'click' lid which is designed to keep foodstuffs dry and fresher for longer than they would normally keep for. Their bases have a protective coating. As I have mentioned, y previous containers lasted well apart from their bases which did corrode a little so this should be a very useful feature in my new kitchen. The containers are made of an anti-corrosive material. A ten year guarantee from Brabantia. SIZE/CAPACITY The size of these containers is ideal for my home where tea, especially, is often used. Once filled with tea bags, sugar and coffee they don't need filling up again too often. Where sugar is concerned I fill the container and then in addition fill a sugar bowl from the larger container which is handy. A 1 kg packet of sugar fits into one container. I mostly buy a large box of tea bags and can fit around just over half into the tea container. The coffee container is big enough for a large 500g of coffee to be emptied into it. I'm not a big coffee drinker and so, as coffee lasts longer than tea in my household, I never used to fill the coffee container but kept my coffee in its original container, feeling it kept better in there but, as this container has a fresh ' flavour-seal click lid' I have recently decided to use all three containers. * Capacity 1.4 Litres * Diameter 11.0 cm * Height 17.5 cm * Width 33.0 cm * Depth 11.0 cm AVAILABILITY/PRICE I purchased from Bodgers of Ilford for a little under £20.00 (£18 I think) during a sale. Amazon £19.63 Debenhams £21.00 Dunelm Mill £16.99 (That's a bargain!) Argos £23.99 SUMMARY I am pleased with my purchase of this set; it was just what I wanted. I feel it looks good and has some clever features and although my last canisters lasted well, I believe these ones have some improved design features which should mean they will last for even longer than my previous containers. I like this manufacturer and would recommend this set of storage canisters. Read the complete review |

Charlotte Watson Square Small Tea Canister
by Whizz11 When we first moved into our newly built house we needed some kitchen items that went with the natural sleek modern look of the kitchen but still had a bit of charm and style to it. Our kitchen has cream cupboards and a black worktop surface so when we saw the Charlotte Watson range of kitchenware we knew it was exactly what we were ... looking for. The storage jar is very quaint and old looking and like something you would find in kitchens of old. It is cream coloured and in a square shape and has old fashioned black writing on it. It has a very Victorian look to it which I like. The writing features a little drawing of Charlotte Watson and then it says Charlotte Watson's Country Tea Canister - For all culinary purposes. On the bottom of the picture you see it says Henry Watson pottery - England - Founded 1800. Now, I'm doubting this canister is actually from 1800 but it has that look about it. The canister is made from cream earthenware so it has a chunky look to it and its also very heavy. The top has a round opening to it and I like this because you can actually lift it up by the bit if you wish by putting your hands around the rim of the opening. At the top is a black lacquered beech lid which is round and tops off the look of the canister well in my opinion. This has an airtight rubber seal around the bottom of it so when you push it onto the jar this seal obviously forms a suction inside and not only keeps the lid on well but also keeps the product that you have inside fresh as well. Obviously as this canister has Tea canister written on it we use this for tea. I keep tea bags in mine and I would estimate that it holds about 50 teabags full up to the top so its quite a handy container. I would also feel comfortable keeping loose tea in here as I know it would be kept fresh with the seal on the lid. The canister cost us in the £15 region which is yes, a bit expensive for a tea canister but then we were also going for the look in our kitchen as well and this makes a nice decoration too. We actually have a matching sugar canister and a matching coffee canister as well and the three of them look really nice lined up on the worktop. There are lots of other earthenware products in the Charlotte Watson range too and it gives your kitchen a nice classic look. Read the complete review |

Brabantia Steel Biscuit Barrel
by lak11 BRABANTIA MATT STEEL BISCUIT BARREL I have purchased many products from the well-known manufacturer Brabantia over the years for my home, especially for my different kitchens. I think I mainly opt for this brand because Brabantia seem to make many matching products for each range and it's nice to be co-ordinated, in my ... opinion. Brabantia products mainly seem to be attractive. A few months after moving into my present address (back in November 1999) we had lots of work done on this house and priority was given to creating a new kitchen from scratch, in an unfinished extension. Once this was done and the kitchen units were installed, I purchased many new accessories, one being a Brabantia biscuit barrel. This container in fact after over ten years of use still looked good but its base has rusted a little (my house is particularly prone to condensation and so rusting is often a problem with many items) and, although it still looks presentable, it seemed appropriate now we have again a new kitchen, to also renew the kitchen accessories to finish it off. Mind you, in truth it isn't yet 'completely' finished. It was towards the end of last year that my husband began a new re fit of our kitchen. He downed tools over Christmas but, as the units were all up by then I bought some new accessories to make the kitchen look nice for the festive season. As the last biscuit barrel made by Brabantia had lasted so well it seemed appropriate to again purchase from this manufacturer. I knew what I wanted and looked on-line to see if the same or similar biscuit barrel, with other matching accessories, from this range was still available. I saw that indeed very similar containers were available. I shopped around as I think that prices for this range are on the steep side. I did have a look at cheaper containers but when it comes to storage for biscuits I thought most barrels I saw were either massive or too small. My husband is the main biscuit eater in my house; he likes to dunk and I don't! I wanted the container big enough to keep a decent selection inside but didn't want my husband going too mad either! After looking for accessories at a busy time I thought: what the heck! Let's go for the Brabantia! By this time I had bought the tea and coffee canisters and so wanted something to look good with these but hadn't yet come across (except on-line) the biscuit container to match. Then, while visiting 'The Range' I found the barrel I wanted, so added this to my already overfull shopping basket. The shop had both the steel and the matt design on the shelf. I chose the matt steel with a black lid. I prefer a brushed or matt steel look as I find that shinier effects need more cleaning especially in the case of fingerprints. SIZE I think size is important with a biscuit container, although of course, how big depends on the number of occupants or more to the point the number of biscuit eaters living in the in the home. Now my children are grown up they don't seem to get through many biscuits but I still find this one is the perfect size for my family. Depending on size of the packets of course but I would say roughly three packs will fit in here which is a good amount bout right as smaller would be a nuisance and if the tin was much bigger the biscuits would lie in here for too long. This barrel does have a stay fresh feature but more on that in a minute or two. This round container is sold as being 'family size' with a capacity of 3.5 litres. It has a diameter of 16.8 cm and is 19.5 cm in height. FEATURES One very important feature for me with kitchen accessories is an easy to open and close lid, as I have problems with some lids. However, this barrel has a very easy to fit on and off lid. It can be opened the way intended by pulling off the lid from the top or from under the rim, where a fingertip eased underneath opens it with ease. The ease of opening is great for me as, although I mostly stay away from the biscuits sometimes I need sugar and to not be able to quickly get to a chocolate biscuit or a cookie is detrimental to my health. This biscuit barrel has a useful feature in the underside of its lid; this is small removable capsule filled with crystals which absorb moisture, therefore keeping the biscuits within fresh for longer. To keep this capsule working at its best every so often it should be removed and placed into a hot oven for a short time to be dried out. To help with this the first letter of every month of the year is printed upon it the circular surround of the capsule; the capsule itself has a pointer on it which can be moved to show in which month the capsule was dried. The barrel has a wire handle which makes it easy to move around, especially if wanting to move it to a different room when visitors arrive for a cup of tea and a biscuit or two. I mean to move it to the visitors not to hide it! I chose the matt steel colour which is fingerprint proof. I have yet to know for sure how true this is but so far would say it doesn't seem to have any finger prints upon it. * This product has the Brabantia ten year guarantee. * PRICE/AVAILABILITY * The Range £19.99 * Dunelm Mill £17.99 * http://www.electricshopping.com £28.16 Read the complete review |
