Culinare Swivel Peeler
by Whizz11
What kind of peeler are you?
I had never actually thought about it before but when I was thinking about what to write for this review on a product that works really well for me I decided to talk about how I use it and how it is so functional. The Culinare swivel peeler is probably the best peeler I have used. The peeler is ... basically one long straight utensil and the blade is at the top of a plastic handle and sits vertically in your hand. I like this type of peeler much better than one that has quite a thick handle and sits horizontally in your hand.
The plastic handle itself is a bit thicker around the portion that you hold in your hand. The plastic is that white tough plastic which I find holds up to a lot of tough peeling. This allows me to get a good grip on it and I find it doesn't slip when its in my hand which is nice. I find in this way I can get way more precision when I am peeling vegetables and the blade does not stop or move which is nice.
The swivel headed blade does not move too much, it does not move 360 degrees, just from side to side as it is mounted in the top of the plastic but it moves just enough that it really follows the contours of whatever fruit or vegetable you are cutting and goes over all the lumps and bumps with ease meaking it quicker and easier to peel things. I find the straight plastic handle very helpful in this situation too as I can place my index finger a bit higher up the shaft to give me some resistance against whatever it is I am peeling. The blade is made of stainless steel and I have had this for quite a few years now and it is still as sharp as ever and has no problem with getting blunt or anything like that. Now, its funny, I peel different vegetables differently with this peeler and I only started to think about it when I started writing this review. With potatoes I find I peel towards me as I can hold the potato more easily this way but with carrots I peel away from me, strange but interesting I think.
The top of the peeler also has a De-eying tool which is basically a sharp point and then a bit of a curve in the plastic so you can use it to I guess take the top/stalk off of any fruits or vegetables that you may be peeling. I've never really had the need to use this but I'm sure other people find it helpful.
I always put my peeler in the dishwasher and it comes out nice and clean. A very useful tool in the kitchen! Read the complete review |

Purple Spectrum Collection Kitchen Roll Holder
by bluebell190
I was bought this kitchen roll holder for Christmas by my mum, she bought me lots of kitchen items! The great thing about them is that they are all from the same collection so they all exactly match in colour. This is from Dunelm Mill, and it is their purple spectrum range, which is a bright and vibrant plum colour. You can get all your ... kitchen accessories in this colour, so you can colour coordinate your kitchen!
This kitchen roll holder has a purple base, which is thick and solid, and it feels really sturdy. The base has a pole attached to it, to slot your kitchen roll onto. The pole has a rounded part at the top, like a small ball attached to it, to finish the look off. It fits all sizes of kitchen roll, and when you pull the kitchen roll off, the base stays put, it does not move, it is heavy enough to stay on your kitchen worktop and allow you to rip off pieces of kitchen roll, without it moving.
The poll is quite long compared to others I have used, when you put the kitchen roll on the pole, there is a 10cm length of pole sticking out the top, this doesn't really bother me, but I do think it is rather a long pole and could have been made slightly smaller to look nicer! The dimension of this kitchen roll holder are Dia. 15cm (6") x H 35cm (14") (taken from the Dunelm Mill website.) It is a stainless steel holder, and really easy to clean. You just wipe it down with a cloth, and dry it.
I can't really complain about this kitchen roll holder, it does the job it is suppose to do, you always know where your kitchen roll is and it's easy to get to! You can purchase this kitchen roll holder for only £3.99, which is a decent price, as it looks a lot more expensive than it is. If you are looking for a stylish and fashionable kitchen item, definitely have a look in Dunelm at this range! Read the complete review |

Ikea Koncis Potato Masher
by karlsm93
For quite a few years I had a black plastic Judge potato masher, which I didn't have much of a problem with, when it came to mashing potatoes, however, my husband, on occasions when he would mash the potatoes for me at lunch/dinner time, would moan and moan that the plastic masher was useless and that I needed to get a proper metal ... masher to give a bit of strength when mashing. I didn't really want to go and purpose a brand new expensive metal masher when I found the other to work well enough, but the last time we were in Ikea, I saw this Koncis Potato Masher for £2, and I thought it was definitely worth a go at that price, and would keep hubby happy!
At £2, I really wasn't expecting that much to be honest, and in comparison to my plastic masher, this one seemed to be very long and I thought therefore, it might be a bit cumbersome when it would come to mashing. It is actually almost 40cm in length. This masher is actually made from Stainless Steel so it is a good quality product. There is nothing overly fancy about this masher. It is entirely metal with the handle having a thicker metal handle to help give you more grip.
For those that have a dishwasher, it is useful that this product is dishwasher safe, which is good, because I find all potato mashers hard to wash, and ensure you get all the potato off around the actually mashing head.
My husband was the first to use this masher and he hailed it as fabulous, especially in comparison to the plastic masher. I wasn't sure whether my husband was being a little over dramatic in order to prove to me he was right! However, when I used it myself, I really couldn't believe that I had used a plastic masher for so many years. THere was absolutely no comparison in terms of being able to mash. Even when it came to things like carrots and parsnips it took hardly any effort to mash them using this product, whereas when I look back, it did take much more effort with the plastic masher. So, I had to eat humble pie and admit hubby was right!
To be honest, I can't see how a more expensive metal potato masher would be any better than this £2 one, except that it may 'look' fancier, but who really cares what it looks like when it most likely going into a kitchen drawer when finished with. Once I had started using this masher, I automatically put my plastic one in the bin, and have continued to be impressed every since with this masher and would very much recommend it!
