Hanson Traditional Mechanical Kitchen Scales
by karlsm93 I do like to bake when I get time and over Christmas, with having visitors, I found myself baking a lot more than usual. On Christmas Eve, having used the weighing scales that I have had since I was married to make some scones, I left it out beside the sink to wash, and someone knocked it on the floor and smashed the plastic measuring ... bowl, leaving me with no choice other than buy a new set of scales. The only positive factor of the timing, was that despite it being Christmas, there were also the sales starting. I hate digital weighing scales and much prefer to see that little arrow moving on the scale and so I wanting mechanical scales. After researching a little online, I found that these Hanson scales were reasonably priced and were highly praised. AFter deciding on these Hanson scales, I found Dunelm mill had them on offer at just over a tenner, which is brilliant value in my book, given that I have seen them priced nearer £20 on the likes of amazon. These scales come in a choice of colours, although sometimes this can also mean varying price tags, on some websites, this was not the case in Dunelm. I liked the cream version of these scales rather than the black of red, however, I wasn't going to pay extra just to have the colour, given they sit in a cupboard when not in use, but I was able to get the cream version for the same price as the others in Dunelm. If you have a traditional style kitchen these scales, particularly the cream version will look very apt. These scales are easy to set up and it just takes a little bit of use with a screwdriver just to fit the base that you set the stainless steel bowl on. This bowl is also very easy to clean which is great when you using it for messy baking ingredients. It is easy to adjust the scales when they get knocked etc. I also think the face of the scales is very easy to read, and I know my mother, who now needs glasses for reading, was impressed with how big and clear the digits were even without having her glasses on. Yes, there are other mechanical scales on the market that will cost you more than double the cost of these, however, in comparison I'm not sure why you pay the extra. These scales look the part, they work brillantly, and are at a great price, even if you don't get them in the sale. I am very happy with my purchase, and at least I can't break this bowl! Argos Value Range Mechanical Scale
by purplekimmy After my ex left me with no contents in my flat, and I realised I had to replace everything, I opted for the cheap option on most things. Weighing scales being one of them. I paid £3.99 for these beauties from Argos, what can go wrong I thought? They are not the most attractive blue scales in the world but luckily the base ... actually fits into the bowl so when I put them away in my cupboard they don't take up much room really. On a scale of 1 - 10 (Scale did you see what I did there?? Ha ha ha) for what they are and what they do I would give them a 5. They are not the worst by any means but in terms of being wholly accurate, they don't do well there either. I do find if you drop ingredients into the bowl (like butter when you make a cake) the scales will jolt and register a much heavier weight than they should do. If however you take the other option of putting things in too lightly, it doesn't give a correct weight either. I find I have to weight something, take the bowl off and push down on the scale a couple of times, then put the bowl and ingredients back on to get a roughly accurate weight. While this can be a tad aggravating, I have done this routine for so long now that I am used to having to do it, it is not that big a deal anymore. At the end of the day they cost less than £4 so what do I expect? In general they dont do a bad job, if you need very accurate measurements you need a better set of scales. Read the complete review |

Argos Value Range Mechanical Scale
by rolandrat ---Why I Got These--- Well at the risk of sounding a cheapskate we actually got given one when brother-in-law was upgrading his kitchen. Not one to refuse hand-ons and it was better than the one we curently used so we kept it rather than passing it on to the charity shop. ---The ... Brand--- Argos Value Range. ---The Product--- Mechanical kitchen weighing scales. Maximum capacity 5kg / 11lbs. Graduations of 25g / 1oz. 1.2 litre bowl with curved corners. Transparent blue plastic body and bowl. White face with red pointer. Adjustable black knob above the dial to re-set pointer to zero. Bowl is 5.5 x 6.5 x 2.5 inches. Base is 5 x 5 inches with the top protruding weighing section being about 2 inches. The base is about three inches deep. ---Cost--- £3.99. ---My Opinion--- Quite a vivid blue clear plastic scales, but not unattractive. The best thing about this scales is that it has quite a large bowl - the previous cheap scales we were using had a very small bowl which meant flour etc would have to be measured out in two goes, but not with this one. Some reviews on the Argos website say that this is not very accurate but we have found it to be fine, and to be fair most of their reviews are complimentary. It may not be 100% accurate if you need complete accuracy but for our needs it works just fine. It has an adjustable knob on the front to take the pointer to zero. We tend to use this scales quite often - for bread and pizza making mostly. Neither I nor my son has found any problem with it at all and at the price we would definitely recommend it. The bowl is good and large and with curved sorners which make washing up easy as you always tend to get some flour stuck in there. The base just needs a quite wipe with a damp cloth. I also often use the scales for weighing small parcels or large envelopes as we live in the countryside with no post office and I will often work out the cost myself using the scales - and perhaps stick a small denomination stamp on as extra just in case. This scales sits on our window sill as it is used so much we have not bothered to find a home for it in a cupboard. It may not be my favourite choice of colour but in the big scheme of things as long as it works that is all that matters. A great basic scales which has a much larger and more useful bowl that the other cheap ones we have bough in the past. I have never had a digital scales but the bother of needing batteries would annoy me and I much prefer the basic sort of mechanical scales - so this one suits me just fine. Would be great for anyone starting out or on a budget. ---Star Rating--- 5 stars. ---Would I Recommend?--- Yes. ---Website--- www.argos.co.uk Read the complete review |
