Alessi Bunny & Carrot Kitchen Roll Holder
Advantages: Cute and Functional
In the few months before my husband and I moved into our first place together, we had the awesomely fun task of buying all the stuff for our new abode (yay! all that space to fill!). We spent many many hours trawling through random websites and on ebay looking for cuter versions of real things (trying to use the William Morris "Everything should be either useful or beautiful" belief as a goal) and struck gold when we discovered Alessi.
Functional products that are cute too! Perfect.
Who are Alessi and Where do you buy their Products?
Alessi is a chic italian design company, founded in 1921 they produce mainly kitchen/ bathroom products from stainless steel and plastic. They take otherwise ordinary objects and hit them with high end design prowess and the results can be spectacular.
You see their products in places like John Lewis, in boutiques (the store "Set" in Leicester for example) and it is always quite pricey (seeing as my last kitchen roll holder was £3 from Tesco.. this is a step into the realm of high end design).
I saw the Alessi Bunny & Carrot Kitchen Roll holder and kept umm-ing ad ahh-ing over it as £25 seemed really really expensive for a kitchen roll holder. All I could find on ebay were buy it now items from £25 to £29 and on the internet, they are sold for between £19.95 and £34.95 if you look in google "shopping" section for retailers. After a few weeks of "I cannot justify spending £25 on a kitchen roll holder" conversing, and a lot of time wasted looking around for something just as cute but cheaper.... I eventually just hit the Buy button as I knew I was not going to see anything I liked as much.
A few days later, a box arrived in the post, I excitedly opened the box and had to find a kitchen roll to put on it to get the full effect and I can geniuinely say it is the best kitchen roll holder I have ever had, used or seen as it fuses cute with functional so perfectly.
I have bought about a dozen alessi products now and not one of them has disappointed me. The Bunny & Carrot kitchen roll holder is a tall carrot shaped piece of tough plastic that is slightly taller than a kitchen roll. The tuft at the top of the carrot sticks out when the roll is on. The "Bunny" is a see through coloured plastic bunny that is on a rotating piece of plastic so you can move the rabbit in towards the kitchen roll to provide the tension to easily tear off the sheets and to keep the overall thing nice and tidy looking.
The whole thing is washable and comes in a series of colours- the carrot is always orange but I have seen green, blue and pink bunnies and bases.
The item measures 6 x 9 inches for the base (6 inches at the widest part of the base (the bit under the carrot) by 9 inches long and the bunny is 6 inches tall and the carrot is 11 inches high.
Although I still consider it was a really expensive buy, I would now really miss it if it was not in my kitchen. It brightens the place up and we have had no end of people going "awww wow- where did you buy that!". As the quality matches the cuteness I'm confident unless Alessi bring out something that supercedes this that just blows my mind, I will have this in my kitchen for many many years to come.
Summary: The prettiest darn carrot you ever did see
