My daughter loves a boiled agg and soldiers for breakfast. I didn't really have many eggcups in my house, in fact, I only had one, which would result in the rest of us eating our eggs in empty fabric conditioner lids (these make excellent eggcups!).
Eventually, we decided it might possibly be time to upgrade and buy some real eggcups, and as I had some amazon vouchers at the time, I looked for some on there, falling in love with this little character.
Although the Cico eggcup above is in blue, there are various other colours available - yellow, green, and pink. I opted for mine in a cheery bright yellow.
When he arrived, I was delighted . Alessi is an italian kitchenware company. They've been around for a fair while (since 1921 in fact), and since the mid eighties have started to specialise in designing objects that are functional yet decorative, with many of their designs being colourful and quirky .
This eggcup certainly fits the mould there - a cute little chap with a baseball cap, sitting down, his arm outstretched holding a spoon. The egg can be nestled inside his head, and can then wear the cap. The cap also functions as a salt cellar - so you have egg cup, salt and spoon all in one place when you are ready to serve .
This little man functions well, easily accomadating even quite large eggs, and my daughter especially loves him. I think he is brilliant - a quirky and cute design, fully functional, and not expensive at just under a tenner. The only downsides for me is that the spoon is perhaps a little blunt for bashing the egg open - I tend to pre-crack the egg with a metal spoon before popping his hat on .
It might also be a downside for some people that this little chappie is not dishwasher safe .
I love this little guy - and he's opened my eyes to the Alessi range - I now have other alessi items, all as cute and quirky as this, and it looks like it could become quite an obsession for me!
ALESSI CICO EGG CUP IN BLUE
ALESSI - Alessi are an Italian family ran design company which started way back in 1935. The Alessi idea has always been to create unique, stylish designs which are highly decorative but also very usable and hardwearing. The Cisco Egg Cup certainly meets all of these objectives.
COST AND AVAILABILITY - £9.55 from Nova in Aberdeen. These cuties are widely available from all good home and department stores, such as Debenhams and John Lewis. I have also found some on the internet starting at £7.20, however if ordering in this way please check the total price as some have postage and packaging added on. (Usually around £2 - £4)
VARIATIONS - They are available in a choice of colours, from blue, green, yello, red and pink.
FEATURES - This cute little figure is not just for holding your eggs! It also comes gripping on to it's very own detachable spoon, and as I eventually found out, it's hat is a secret salt shaker!! I didn't look at the features on the box as I thought all it did was apparent to see - I was wrong!!
DURABILITY AND USE - Little Cico is entirely made out of plastic. He is also dishwasher proof. I bought my daughter her one six years ago to encourage her to eat eggs and he is still going strong now!! He doesn't look as fresh as he first did, a few scratches here and there, but he has certainly been a great buy!!
It has really encouraged her to eat boiled eggs just so her little friend can join in too!! She originally would only eat fried eggs which were not as healthy an option but now she needs no persuading to eat eggs for her breakfast!! In fact she will quite happily eat them for her lunch and dinner too!!
RECOMENDATIONS - I would highly recommend these egg cups for adults and kids alike. They also make unusual gifts and come beautifully presented in a sophistocated little box and a lot of the stores will gift wrap them too!
They are quite expensive but considering their life-span they become money well spent. Kids and adults alike will fall for Cico's charm!!
Novelty egg cup available in a range of bright and attractive colours.
