After recently getting a new kitchen fitted I decided to do away with all the old and replace it with new. The main reason for this was the fact that the jars and containers which were home for things like, Tea bags, Coffee, Sugar, Cereals, Pasta and doggie treats were looking really tired and tatty, so these were the first to be replaced.
After recently spending a fortune on designer Alessi pet accessories, I found that they also did Kitchen and Homeware items that are all designed for the purpose but were very unique and novel at the same time.
The things that appealed to me were these unique storage jars, so I decided to buy a few to blend in with my new funky kitchen.
THE ALESSI HISTORY
Alessi is a company which was founded by an Italian family in the early 1920's, however this never really took to the market until the 1980's when new blood was introduced into the company, in the form of designers that submitted their ideas and produced items that appealed as they were so different.
All of the Alessi Kitchen and Homeware range is very quirky and unique making it desirable by many, and I do have to admit the prices also reflect this so they can be expensive, but as far as I am concerned they are worth it.
Alessi have gone from one extreme to another across the world, for their unique and novel ideas within your home.
THE NOVELTY JAR
This is basically a 140cl glass jar that comes with a funky plastic lid, which has a little Gianni hanging man stuck to the underneath of the lid.
This may sound strange but this is how it is so novel as far as I am concerned, once you fill the jar the little man suspends himself above the contents within the jar and appears to be hanging on for dear life.
The lid and the little man are made from a plastic, which has a slight rubber seal surrounding it. This seal forms an air tight suction one the lid is on the jar, which enables the jars contents to stay fresh at all times.
At first the lid was very hard to pull off the jar when we first started to use them, but after a few days the seal seemed to soften and this helped getting the lid on and off without tipping the entire contents all over the floor during your battle to get into it.
The jar is made from a clear glass that is roughly 4mm thick which it very good as you can store bulky items into without worrying you will break it.
I have no doubt that this jar has been very well made and it will last forever.
I have found them very easy to clean as both the glass and plastic parts can be washed up easily or they can even go in the dish washer, so keeping them clean will never be a problem.
You can get these jars in many different sizes, however I find that the 140cl jar was adequate for most of my storage needs. Each Jar stands at twenty four centimetres high and the width across the jar is thirteen centimetres, so as you can imagine it is fine to have these storage jars on display as they will not over crowd the kitchen.
PRICE / AVAILABILITY
You can buy these fantastic little jars from many Alessi stockists, I find that you tend to find it in larger stores of John Lewis and then small gift shops.
I personally got my jars from Amazon www.amazon.co.uk and I paid £12.50 for each 140cl sized jar, the smaller jars I bought were slightly cheaper at £8.50 each.
You can buy these in many different sizes and many different colours, I bought a few of each colour as they are equally as funky. They come in bright Pink, Yellow, Blue, Red and Green.
I adore my new storage jars, as I see it why not add I little bit of humour into the kitchen. They look very funky and never fail to give me a giggle whenever I look at them all lined up with the little man hanging on for dear life.
I find that the one and only down side to these pots is the fact that you can't fill them up fully as the man stuck to the underside of the lid obstructs any items you may wish to store in them. However I am sure this is part of the design as you really need to see the little fella otherwise they would just be glass jars at the end of the day.
These jars do have a very good capacity as they can store up to a kilo or litre of fluids, so I do find them ample for string tea, coffee, sugar and breakfast cereals in.
As I said these do come in various sizes and colours so I am sure you can get one to meet all of your storage needs.
