Chef Aid Rotary grater
I have always wanted one of these (food geek I know) and I hate the normal ones, as I always end up almost grating my fingers off. I have been looking for one of these and I had not seen them in any stores really but I saw this one in Clas Ohlson (an ikea wannabe), so I though I would try it out.
*About the product*
It is made out of white plastic and this product comes with three grater types, including, a slicer, fine grater and a larger size one. They are all interchangeable, dishwasher safe and the actual tumblers are made out of metal.
*My opinion of the product*
Initially I did not think that this product would be very good, as it is made of out plastic and I find that most plastic kitchen tools seem to break easier than metal ones. So I was not sure how long this would last, but I have been using this product for a couple of months now and it is working really well - and there are no breakages!
It is not the prettiest thing in the world, being a white plastic grater is difficult, but it works fantastically. It is a cheese grater, but it can also be used with chocolate - I have not used it with chocolate but after using this product for a while, I would definitely say that it is not up to the job of grating hard chocolate.
I have used this product with a range of cheese, such as normal hard cheese, austrian smoked cheese (which is really quite soft) and edam. I find that it works really really well with all. With the austrian smoked cheese I can not grate it with a normal grater, it just won't work as it is quite soft, but it works fantastically well with this product and grates it quickly and easily.
It is super easy to use, all you do is cut a piece of cheese that same size as the section in the grater and then twist the handle until it is done. To make sure that you don't just snap the handle off, is to hold it close to the top/main section of the grater otherwise the handle make break. One of the best things about this product is that you don't have to hold the cheese to grate it, you just have to cut it up and put it in the small section to grate it. Also I don't end up grating my fingers off, as you actually can't!
I find that with harder cheeses the plastic does feel like it is under strain, and I have though that it might just snap on a number of occasions, but it has stayed strong and I think it works really well. Although if you put something harder in it, such as chocolate I think it will definitely break.
This product is dishwasher safe and it has survived many a dishwasher journeys, it is also really easy just to wash it in the sink. One of the best things about this product is that it can come apart. The individual metal graters can click out easily and then you can clean all inside the grater and holder with no problems. It is obviously more time consuming to a bit more difficult to clean than a normal grater due to the larger number of parts and as the grater pieces are circular, but it is still a great item to have in the kitchen.
The only thing that is not so good about this product is that some of the cheese gets stuck on the edges of the plastic grater surround, this then gets wasted.
*Price and availability*
I bought this from Clas Olhson and it cost about £8/9, which is a bit expensive for a grater, but in my opinion it is well worth buying! I have not seen this product in other stores, but they are being sold on ebay - they do not appear on the clas olhson website either.
*Quick and easy to use and clean
*Works really well with a range of cheeses
*No risk of grating your fingers off
*Grates well, three sizes to grater to choose from (slicing, fine and large)
*Plastic holder - but it is quite strong and durable
*A little bit expensive but it is worth buying in my opinion
*Not widely available
