Review of Cookingtime Plastic Safety Peeler
A peeler for potatoes, vegetables and fruits is a pretty basic piece of kitchen equipment. However, given the myriad of peelers on the market these days, it can be difficult to find one to suit.
I had the same peeler for years, literally. It was a boring wooden handled peeler with a steel cutting blade, a bit shabby and hardly pretty, but I liked it. One day it vanished, I think I may have inadvertently thrown it out with the potato peelings and I tried many different potato peelers during my search for the right replacement for my trusty old peeler.
After trying many different design of peeler, I came across the Cookingtime range in a local independent kitchenware shop and bought the plastic safety peeler. I believe I paid in the region of £3 for it and have owned it now for over three years.
The peeler is constructed of sturdy white plastic, it measures approximately 4.5 inches long. The handle is flat, it has a pattern of raised dots for added grip and a hole to hang the peeler up if you so wish. There is no colour choice with this peeler, it's white or nothing!
The cutting blade measures around 2 inches long, it is made of stainless steel and the cutting edge is held within the plastic edges to protect your fingers in use. There is a little protruding piece of plastic at the side of the blade, designed for removing blemishes, or 'eyes' from your vegetables. The blade is the fixed type, I find this is easier to control than the swivel style of potato peeler.
The peeler is easy to clean too, the blade does occasionally gather a few shreds of debris in the corners, but these are very easily removed when washing up. The manufacturer states that the peeler can be cleaned in a dishwasher, however as I do not own one, I cannot really comment on this point!
**My Thoughts and Conclusion**
This handy little gadget is a must have for me. I know it is easy enough to peel fruit and vegetables with a sharp knife, but I prefer to use a peeler, as I find it quicker and more effective. I tend to peel rather too thickly when using a knife, which leads to wastage and irritation on my part!
The blade on this Cookingtime peeler is ideal for almost all kinds of vegetables and fruits. I tend to cook many vegetables in their skins, however some things do have to be peeled. I use the peeler predominantly for old potatoes, swede and other root vegetables, but have also found it successful for peeling apples and other fruits. I have also used this to produce shavings of hard cheese when needed for a pizza topping or similar recipe.
The blade is still sharp after much use and over all, I am very pleased with the peeler. It works very well, peeling thinly and neatly and the peeler is wearing very well.
I am right-handed and I find the peeler is comfortable in use. My eldest granddaughter is left-handed, she has had difficulty with many household items, but she can use this peeler just as well as I can.
There is not a great deal one can really say about such a mundane piece of kitchen paraphernalia, but when you need a peeler, you want one that will work efficiently and with a minimum of fuss. This peeler is an excellent buy in my opinion.
A useful little tool and one I would recommend to others.
Thank you for reading.
