What kind of peeler are you?
I had never actually thought about it before but when I was thinking about what to write for this review on a product that works really well for me I decided to talk about how I use it and how it is so functional. The Culinare swivel peeler is probably the best peeler I have used. The peeler is basically one long straight utensil and the blade is at the top of a plastic handle and sits vertically in your hand. I like this type of peeler much better than one that has quite a thick handle and sits horizontally in your hand.
The plastic handle itself is a bit thicker around the portion that you hold in your hand. The plastic is that white tough plastic which I find holds up to a lot of tough peeling. This allows me to get a good grip on it and I find it doesn't slip when its in my hand which is nice. I find in this way I can get way more precision when I am peeling vegetables and the blade does not stop or move which is nice.
The swivel headed blade does not move too much, it does not move 360 degrees, just from side to side as it is mounted in the top of the plastic but it moves just enough that it really follows the contours of whatever fruit or vegetable you are cutting and goes over all the lumps and bumps with ease meaking it quicker and easier to peel things. I find the straight plastic handle very helpful in this situation too as I can place my index finger a bit higher up the shaft to give me some resistance against whatever it is I am peeling. The blade is made of stainless steel and I have had this for quite a few years now and it is still as sharp as ever and has no problem with getting blunt or anything like that. Now, its funny, I peel different vegetables differently with this peeler and I only started to think about it when I started writing this review. With potatoes I find I peel towards me as I can hold the potato more easily this way but with carrots I peel away from me, strange but interesting I think.
The top of the peeler also has a De-eying tool which is basically a sharp point and then a bit of a curve in the plastic so you can use it to I guess take the top/stalk off of any fruits or vegetables that you may be peeling. I've never really had the need to use this but I'm sure other people find it helpful.
I always put my peeler in the dishwasher and it comes out nice and clean. A very useful tool in the kitchen!
