“ Brand: Dunelm / Product Type: Tray „
A Laptray was never an item that I ever previously owned, and it wasn't until my husband and I got married that I had experience of using one, as my husband already owned one. My husband never used it for balancing his dinner whilst on the sofa, but used his laptray for filling out paperwork etc as it gave him a flat surface where he could write whilst sitting on the sofa. I have always done a little card making, although much less since my daughter was born and there have been numerous times when I have wanted to sit at the tv making my cards rather than sitting away from my husband in our study, and this is where the laptray came into play, as I started to use my husband's tray for my card making, so I could sit i the living room and make my cards whilst enjoying company or watching tv. The problem came when my husband started to moan, that firstly, I was using it when he wanted to use it, and secondly, there were little glue marks etc being left on it!
So, being a big fan of Dunelm, I looked in their store to see if I could get one for myself at a reasonable price so my husband could no longer complain. Plus, given that I would predominantly be using it for card making when I get the time, it didn't matter if the surface of it got scuffed or marked. Quite a few of my serving trays etc are from Dunelm, and I love some of their more recent modern patterns, including a cupcake pattern. The laptray that I ended up seeing and buying was this cupcake patterned one costing me £5.99 at the time, although it is currently on offer for just under £5.
THe laptrap is rectangular in shape and has a wooden surround. The pattern consists of a mix of a striped border with a selection of cupcake pictures in the middle. Like all laptrays it is padded underneath so is meant to sit comfortably on your lap, allowing you to place your dinner plate or laptop or other items on it without them tipping. The top of the tray can be wiped clean so if you spill things it isn't a big issue. Obviously if you are using it for craft related things, getting hardened glue off etc isn't quite so easy!
All in all, I find this tray to be very comfortable when sitting doing my craft work. I can sit in front of the tv and work away and have a good flat surface to create my designs, so I'm not stuck away at a desk in a study away from tv etc. I love the design on this tray and think it is very modern, but at the same time for the price I paid, I'm not really worried if it gets scuffed from my craft work. A great priced laptray
We have a Dunelm Mill within easy driving distance. The store is modern, sparkling clean and it has a large car park. Dunelm Mill is a brilliant place to visit if you are looking to replace any household goods. They have a large selection of bedding, bathroom accessories, kitchen equipment, laundry equipment, furniture and lighting. An entire section of the mill is set aside for fabric and sewing equipment and they have recently started stocking art and craft supplies too.
Dunelm Mill have excellent sales and the after Christmas sale has been in full swing. There are a good selection of lap trays to choose from but at least four of the trays were in the sale at a reduced price. The polka dot rose lap tray was in the sale but so was one from the cupcakes collection. I liked the cupcake theme and decided to settle for that one. Dunelm had it priced at just under £4.80, which is not at all bad for a lap tray.
The Dunelm lap tray measures 13ins x 17 ins. The outer rim is made from wood and the tray has a sturdy wipe clean surface. The base of the tray is padded to ensure that it stays firmly in place on your lap. It would be all too easy to assume that Dunelm Mill only sell the lap trays to the older generation but I bought the lap tray for my young niece. She loves to come and share a meal with us but she does like to eat while she watches television ( I know..I hear you all groaning!)
The Dunelm Mill lap tray makes life easy. A serving tray with a had flat base does not balance well on a small lap. On the other hand a padded lap tray snuggles itself down into the shape of the lap and stays there making the plate far more stable. Lap trays are invaluable, if you have breakfast in bed then they are ideal. After tea my niece often asks to use the laptop and she can easily place the laptop on the tray without fear of it slipping off.
The cupcake design is really very pretty. If you needed a flat tray and particularly wanted that design then Dunelm Mill have a flat tray with handles that works out cheaper than the lap tray. From my point of view the lap trays are useful. After all so many of us relax in front of the television to eat our meals whether it is right or wrong! If there is no Dunelm Mill nearby then take a look at their comprehensive website.
I do have a dining table but like many people I prefer to sit in front of the tv and eat my dinner unless I have guests or a dinner that is at risk of landing all down my clothes when I'm eating! I do use plastic trays but suffer back problems (and so I thought this would make my plates etc a little higher up!) so when I spotted these 'lap trays' in Dunhelm's costing only £4.99 each when I have never seen them that cheap before I decided it was high time I treated myself to one.
Now I have the Union Jack one and that was cos at the time that's the only one I spotted though on the website (www.dunhelm.com) there are a lot of varieties to pick from including a black and white retro flowered one, a beige and burgundy striped one and one with herbs on (do take a look if interested of course!) and there are a couple of different designs which cost about a pound extra too.
Well the tray is rather large measuring 50cm x 36cm (20" x 14") and mine has a union jack picture on it with the usual white part being a bit beigy and mottled as it is a vintage design and around the edge of it is dark red wood which is slightly raised so things don't slide of the tray with too much ease when its in use. The underside is gently tucked into the tray securely and in my case is a light beige material and is filled with what I assume is small white polystyrene balls.
This is a fantastic tray! Large size, wipe clean and really well made. The soft underside isn't tightly packed so you can move it on your lap with complete ease and as I assumed it would it does bring my dinner closer to me by a couple of inches! Soft and not one bit heavy, I love my lap tray and can heartily recommend these Dunhelm ones. I use mine regularly and had no problems with it at all. With Christmas coming up....this could be the perfect stocking filler for someone I'm sure. Not just use it for meals but you could use it any way you want... I pop my laptop on mine so it doesn't burn my knees when it gets hot as of course this lap tray is heat resistant too!
Only available in Dunhelm stores.
