Like many other, I love the range of colourful kitchen stuff that this brand offers and when I received this set as a Christmas gift last year I was very happy. It's a good starter pack really if you haven't got much kitchen stuff and offers the variety of things you need.
My favourite thing about the set is the measuring cups, offering an easy way to scoop out ingredients for whatever I'm cooking and they're easy enough to clean. Although ultimately this saves room in the cupboards, I've found it slightly annoying to retrieve/restack everything when I want to just use/put back one item. You could say it forces me to be tidy - so that's fine! The largest bowl also doesn't fit very neatly into my sink, but that's not really a slight on the product but more my kitchen.
I can see from Amazon that this set can cost up to a whopping £40 and I've got to say that it's certainly a case of style over substance. The sieve became detached from the plastic top after only a couple of months, and I can't say I was using anything especially heavy in there - the size of it won't allow a load much bigger than approx 400g. Not only was this annoying, but it also meant that the stack wouldn't sit neatly without the sieve.
It's a good product but perhaps not suited to long term use in the case of the sieve - the bowls are still standing and used regularly!
The first time I saw these bowls in Habitat I knew I had to have them. I love colourful things and was moving into my new house at the time so thought I'd treat myself.
I ordered the bowl set off Amazon for £25 which was a lot cheaper than the shop price (£37). So I felt like I had a bargain. Whilst I appreciate you can buy similar items a lot cheaper I did want the branded set and so felt the price justified this.
The main appeal for me is that you can have this set out and accessible (not languishing at the back of a cupboard) on the side and it takes up only the size of the biggest mixing bowl. The bowls all sit inside each other like Russian dolls as you can see from the photo they are so cute.
What you get
You actually get two mixing bowls (large and small) the small one has a pouring lip on the side. A colander (dark blue) and a sieve (green edge) and then four measuring cups with handles. The small bowl also has measurements on the inside for volumes of content which is great if you love to measure out your ingredients correctly. The big bowl has a sort of rubberised base so it is non slip which is handy but hardly noticible to look at.
They all fit in a dishwasher EXCEPT THE SIEVE!! this is made of plastic which would melt and it'd be a shame to ruin the set for this. They all clean up well and nice and I usually hand wash my set as I am still waiting for my dishwasher to be set up in action at any time...
Besides baking and measuring fluids, the measuring cups have come in very handy in entertaining my baby. She can spend hours playing with them, putting things in them and banging them about and they have no damage on them at all. She plays rough too! I know she won't hurt herself as they are plastic and have no rough edges. I am looking forward to baking with her when she is a little older. I think this is the kind of item that stick in your memory and she will always remember playing and baking with this set of bowls.
It's a great colourful set and all the colours are complementary. I appreciate it may not be to everyone's tastes in the kitchen department as it may totally thrash your colour scheme if you have one. You could always keep them in the cupboard if this is the case. I love this set and like having them to hand. Their functionality is great with each size sitting comfortably inside its neighbour. If I had one criticism, it would be that the large and small mixing bowls are OK but a medium sized one would have been useful too.
I think if someone is starting from scratch in a new home with no kitchen paraphenalia then this is a great house warming gift. I think the colours will also appeal to young people, male and female alike. All the bowls and cups are branded on the base with the Joseph Joseph logo so they are a mark of quality and fashion too I suppose.
You can get this set slightly smaller too which comes up a little cheaper but I think if you're going to go for it you might as well get the full set. Check out Amazon prices as they are extremely competitive. Whilst ultimately it is a set of plastic bowls, I get a small kick out of them everytime I see them sitting there and I know I will treasure them for the rest of my life. They are sturdy and fun and can be used in many ways. I've even used the measuring cups to hold dips for buffet style meals and often get complimented on how cute they are by my friends. I suspect I will be wrestling them off my daughter when she gets a bit older!
In a previous review I reviewed the Joseph Joseph index chopping boards set that was a good idea that looked great but was completely impractical so do the Joseph Joseph preparation bowls manage to work for what they are intended? Well I'm pleased to report that yes they do, as well as being stylish they are completely practical and I use them all the time.
They are basically a set of 8 brightly coloured bowls that are all different sizes and for different functions that stack together in the biggest bowl meaning they save a ton of space.
The set consists in order of size, a large mixing bowl, colander, sieve, smaller mixing bowl, 250ml measuring cup, a half measuring cup, an 85ml cup and a small quarter size cup.
The way they stack is absolutely ingenious they all have little handles on the side of them and when stacked in the large mixing bowl they fit together perfectly and the top is flush with the sides so you could even put other things on top if you are really short of space. For anyone who has a small kitchen then these would be perfect as they do manage to save a lot of space, they will fit in a cupboard or as they look so good they could easily just sit on the worktop.
They are made from plastic and are really hardwearing and i use them in the microwave and dishwasher with absolutely no problems. The colours are all really vivid which may not be to everyone's taste but i love it and the different colours of the bowls really go well together.
They cost me £35 which i do think is a little much but then if you actually bought everything separate i suppose it wouldn't be much cheaper if you bought nice quality items.
I honestly think these bowls are great as they are stylish, practical and very useable and would make the perfect present for someone moving into their first home or for someone who only has a small kitchen.
