=== The product ===
These are five blade security scissors. They look like normal scissors but rather than having one pair of blades they have five. The handles are black plastic and the size is reasonable enough for my ladylike hands or my husbands larger hands. The concept of these is very simple but then the price is cheap to compensate for this and that was the main reason that prompted my purchase.
=== The packaging ===
These came packaged in a polythene and there was a small sleeve keeping the scissors closed which I discarded by accident. These aren't the type of scissors that will just come open though as they are quite heavy. The packaging is more than adequate and I wouldn't have packaged them any different. There was no excess packaging to discard which is always a plus point.
=== How to use this ===
Well these should be used in the same way as normal scissors really. Just open and close them over the paper that you want to cut. I tend to cut in horizontally to near the edge of the piece of paper I want to cut and then I cut vertically to ensure that the pieces cut are very very small square shapes to ensure that my document is shredded well.
=== Where can I buy these & for how much? ===
These can be purchased from Amazon.co.uk and currently (September 2011) cost £4.58 with free super saver delivery available.
=== Do they work? ===
Yes. They are simple enough to use, just open, place over the paper you want to shred and then close the scissors to cut a straight cut. I then do it in the opposite direction and the lines are shredded in to very small squares. These are incredibly simple to use and I love the fact that I am able to just shred and remove a small part of a letter if that is what I choose to do. I can therefore just shred a small address and bin the letter providing there is no more personal information contained within.
This allows me to shred documents and the only downside really to using this cheaper way of shredding is that I cannot shred anything more than a single piece of paper at a time and if I want to shred a whole document such as a bank statement then this is obviously quite a time consuming task.
=== Overall opinion ===
I recently broke my wrist and it has taken some time for me to recover from this. The first time I used these scissors I ending up suffering a pinched nerve in my thumb. I used this for about 5-10 minutes, 10 maximum, and then I noticed that my thumb was numb. It took a number of weeks for me to get over this problem and I put it down to bad luck until I used these scissors again. The second time I used them, again for around 5 minutes, I suffered pain and discomfort in my thumb. I then proceeded to switch from my right to my left hand and I suffered a similar discomfort after a few more minutes. The only thing that I can think is causing this is the design of the black handles. While the handles are a reasonable size and can fit smaller or larger hands I believe that the thick rigid black plastic digs in to the hand uncomfortably and causes problems.
I must say that these do shred well but unless wearing thick gloves I would not want to use these again against my skin. I felt that the shredding was good and these were just what I was looking for but unfortunately the major discomfort that I suffered in my thumb mean that these will rapidly be discarded and I will finally stop being a cheapskate and buy a new decent shredder that does the job for me.
