My husband insists on keeping the knives in our household razor sharp, which has resulted in me injuring my fingers time and time again whilst washing up. Whilst I initially was apprehensive with using such an item I have to admit that it has improved the effectiveness and lifetime of our knives and over the years I have become accustomed to using it. The item in question is a Rollsharp Sharpener manufactured by Kitchen Devils, which had been purchased approximately eleven years ago. Unfortunately, it failed only a few months ago as it was not effectively sharpening our blades, so we made an identical purchase and this review discusses our experience of owning and using it.

The black coloured sturdy plastic sharpener is considerably chunky in appearance and measures 15 cm in length, 5 cm in width at its widest part and 6 cm in height at its highest part. It is extremely lightweight and was attached to a piece of cardboard when we made our purchase. If I had not previously owned this product my initial thoughts would have been that it was of an inferior quality, but this is far from the case as it is well made as well as being extremely hard wearing. The upper section houses a piece of transparent plastic covering that consists of a narrow blade guide slot, which is extremely safe as the fingers cannot accidentally slip inside.

Any size knives can be sharpened from the tip to the handle with the exception of those that are scalloped or serrated. To do this the blade is simply placed into the guide slot and gently moved back and fore approximately ten times, which subsequently, activates the ceramic sharpening wheels located inside. My husband suffers with diabetic related neuropathy in his fingers and as a consequence, he experiences difficulties with holding small objects. However, holding the sharpener is extremely safe and comfortable as the handle consists of several grooves to enable an easy grip and he has never experienced any problems when using. Whilst both my husband and I are right handed the product is also suitable for those who are left handed.

The majority of our cooking is made with fresh ingredients so our knives are regularly being used and as a consequence, they become blunt extremely quickly. This is such a handy gadget, as it has enabled us to extend their lifetime whereas previously I would safely dispose of my knives and make new purchases. The product comes with a ten year guarantee and as previously mentioned our previous sharpener exceeded this time by a year, so it is extremely cost effective. It is recommended to occasionally give it a clean either by hand or in a dishwasher and the sharpening wheels located on the plastic unit are accessible by releasing the locking bar which can be found on the underside of the sharpener.

We are extremely pleased with our sharpener as it has saved us a considerable amount of money in the long run as there has been no need to replace blunt knives. If our replacement purchase lasts as long as its predecessor it should last us until 2022! This product comes with my full recommendation and as a result receives 5 stars.
