After breaking two ceramic mixing bowls in as many months I decided that I would switch to a plastic mixing bowl in the hope that it would save both my bank balance and my sanity. The reason being as breaking these with cake mixture in whilst cooking with my son was stressful as I worried he may have got bits of bowl on to him.
I was search in my local Lakeland for inspiration when I came across this 3 bowl mixing set. They appealed to me as the set of three bowls had a good selection of sizes and the stacking nature of them meant they wouldn't take up to much room in my small kitchen.
The three bowls are a rather bright lime green which does add a splash of colour to our baking but what I like about them being such a bright colour is the contrast that the cake mixture or other things have against it. This allows me to see quite clearly how well for example the butter and sugar are creaming together where as with a cream bowl the contrast isn't quite as good. The green colour also hasn't had any scrapes or discoloration in the time of use and does appear to be quite scratch resistant. I have had them about 6 months now and have noticed no change at all.
The base of the bowls have a non slip base and this has really come into its own when baking with my son and is the best feature that I have noticed when compared to our previous ceramic bowls. When he is mixing things himself and pressing hard into his bowl they do remain on the work surface well and this means he is able to do much more than previously without my help. Equally I have found when mixing some butter icing and trying to get the icing sugar creamed with the butter the bowl didn't end up moving across the work surface, meaning I could use greater force than previously so the sugar and butter creamed together quicker.
The pouring lips on the bowls have proved a good feature as this has allowed me to transfer the contents of the bowls with greater ease into baking tins.
The lids on the bowls snap into place quite easily when you get them the right way round. The lips need to match up the right way then they seem to lock into place correctly. I find the lids quite useful if I am letting pastry rest or as I have done recently soaking fruit in brandy overnight for the Christmas cake. This means the bowls can be left on the side in the kitchen without the temptation for one of the cats to try to jump up and eat the contents. I have also used these bowls upside when storing a cake on them. What I do is place the cake on the lid then push the bowl on top to click it into place and then you have a nice little cake box.
The three bowls stack very nicely within each other and don't take up too much room in my cupboards. I find the three different sizes quite useful depending on what I am baking. It also means that I can vary the size of bowl my son uses when helping me. I find using the large bowl gives him a greater area to mix things in and actually stops bit sending to many bits over the edge onto the work surface.
The insides of each bowl have some marks indicating a graduated level in millilitres but I have never personally used these and am a bit unsure what purpose they actually would serve.
In regards to washing of these I find them very simple to keep clean and have had no marks on them. They are dishwasher safe but as we don't have one I can't comment on how well they hold up to being cleaned in one.
As the bowls are air tight I have also found the small bowl to be quite good for storing leftovers in the fridge. I have stored things such as old roast vegetables and meat and I have found that they have kept well in the bowls. I think the air tight nature is also quite good as it stops heavily fragrant food such as garlicky chicken smelling out the rest of the fridge.
Overall and recommendation
I would definitely recommend these bowls from Lakeland they are nice and bright and cheerful. The plastic is robust and stands up well without any scratches or discoloration. The non slip bowls make baking with my son easier and the selection of sizes caters for my every baking and cooking need to date. At £10.29 for the set I think they are a good buy.
