Lakeland Orange Peelers
Advantages: Cheap, easy to use, work well at removing skin
Disadvantages: Pith remains
Since being on Slimming World trying to lose weight, I've been eating loads of fruit and veg, and actually quite enjoying myself. One thing continually frustrated me though - I adore oranges, yet I find them incredibly hard to get into. This is possibly down to the fact that, working in food, I keep my nails trimmed down very short for hygeine reasons , which unfortunately also leaves me with no nails to dig into the thick skin of an orange to get the peeling started.
I would resort to either biting into the bitter, waxy skin to give myself a starting point, or chopping my orange into quarters and going at it like slices of melon, which always resulted in a sticky dribbly chin - until I saw these orange peelers at 99p for two in my local Lakeland .
At such a cheap price, I was certainly willing to give them a go, and I'm glad I did. Each small peeler has a looped handle attached to a curved piece of plastic, the curve ideally sized to fit around the edge of an orange. On the underside of the curve is a small plastic blade (not sharp enough to do any damage with, fear not) that when the peeler is pulled down the side of an orange, will score the skin, making it easy to get your fingers round the skin flaps to remove section by section . Of course, this removes only the thick outer peel, and not the pith, but a few scrapes with a dinner knife and it's ready to eat!
What can I say ? These little devices work brilliantly, and make eating oranges so much easier . On the downside, they are rather small, and could easily be thrown out along with the peel by mistake (I speak from experience) or get lost in cluttered utensil drawers . The looped handle could be used as a way of hanging this up should you need to . However, I now have one of these attached to my keyring so I always have it to hand!
These are a great little gadget, and at only 99p a pair, not at all expensive - you could have one at work and one at home, or even give them to kids that take fruit to school. Excellent - 4 stars, one off for me still having to remove the pith by hand, but this does most of the hard work for me, for which I'm glad!
