Lakeland Orange Peelers
Advantages: Makes orange peeling easy
Disadvantages: None at all
Sometimes the most simple little gadgets are the best and this little orange peeler from Lakeland is just that. Both Mark and myself love oranges and grapefruit but I hardly ever buy them because just like my dad Mark "cant peel oranges" and while I would peel one at home I like to have my fruit for lunch and trying to peel an orange at work is not an option for me. Its messy and gets down my nails. It was my mum who bought the orange peelers and gave me one. She bought them because she has an autoimmune illness, and as a result her nails are really soft and bendy making it quite difficult to peel the fruit.
The orange peelers are from Lakeland and cost just 99p for a pack of 2. The orange peelers are made from plastic, mine is green, I'm not sure if other colours are available to not. They are basically a little plastic ring attached to another piece of curved plastic which has a small plastic blade sticking out from underneath it. The idea is that you simply put your finger through the plastic ring, press the little blade into the skin of your orange at the top and pull the peeler down the orange, this scores a neat line down the peel, repeat this all the way around the fruit and then simply pull back the peel and remove. Its almost like peeling a banana.
I have since bought another couple of these so I had one to keep in my desk drawer at work. They mean I can now take oranges to work with me and don't have to spend ages picking peel from an orange resulting in stained fingernails. As they are tiny they are ideal to just pop into a lunch box along with an orange, they are not going to take up any room, and being made from plastic there's no risk in cutting yourself either. The ring on the peeler is a good size so this could easily be used by men, no more excuses. They are also ideal to take on picnics too.
I'm not sure if these are dishwasher proof or not but they don't really need a lot of washing just a quick dunk in the washing up bowl is fine. If I have any gripe with these its that it does sometimes leave the white layer under the peel on the orange, I personally think this depends on the type of orange. This can also be used on Satsuma's but personally I don't really bother as they are usually easy to peel anyway.
I would certainly recommend these little peelers, they take the hassle from peeling an orange making it quick and simple and even the men in my family can now manage to peel their own oranges too.
Summary: A very handy little gadget
