Lakeland Potato Ricer
Whatever the name you prefer, potatoes, spuds or tatties, I love them! I like them roasted, fried, baked or in salads, but I particularly love them mashed. However, I hate a lumpy mash so I was quite pleased that while browsing around Lakeland that I spotted this potato ricer, something I had only ever seem until that point on cookery shows. Since the day I brought this home it really has been one of the most used little gadgets in our kitchen, I now use this every time that I cook mashed potatoes. Personally, I find that it doesn't take much more effort than using a regular masher and the results are so much tastier, producing a really smooth mash time after time.
Using this is very straightforward, I use a tablespoon to just scoop the potatoes out of the pot and into the ricer then you just squeeze the handle shut and then watch as the potato falls out the other end. After you have mashed it all I then give it a bit of a mix with a wooden or metal spoon just to make it look more like mashed potato should and not like a bowl of tiny fragments of potato. The first couple of times I used this I might have been a bit slower, but now I can get all that potatoes riced in no time and I no longer worry about them going cold before I have the chance to eat them. It really doesn't take all that long to mash the potatoes when using this and in my opinion I think that they taste really smooth and much creamier, even with only the slight addition of some butter and milk.
If you are interested in buying one of these for yourself, I believe that Lakeland are currently selling them for £12.49. I have had so much use from mine that I think for the price I have gotten my money's worth. The hard white plastic that this is predominantly made from seems to last well and although mine has maybe a few bumps it still looks perfectly fine, despite being used on a semi regular basis.
The ricer is really easy to clean and you can either just wash it in a bowl of soapy water after use or put it in the dishwasher. I do recommend that you wash this sooner rather than later because if you let the remaining potato dry it can be much more of a nightmare to clean off. I do sometimes find that the metal insert can get stuck in place, when this happens I either let it soak to loosen any stuck on mashed potato, or I give it a firm whack with the wooden spoon.
With the potato ricer you do get three different steel inserts with different size holes for the food to be pressed through. However, l have found that I only ever use the finest holed one, as for my liking it makes a perfectly smooth mash. I think that the larger holed ones are meant for making fruit puree, something I have never tried so sadly I can't comment on it. Or I think that they could be used if you prefer a coarser mashed potato.
This gets a full five out of five stars from me I have been really pleased with the ricer and it is more than a year old and still going strong. I would happily recommend this to anyone and I really think that if you are fond of well mashed tatties then this is an item that might be for you.
Summary: Five out of five stars
