Advantages: Fun. Re-useable. Convenient. Light. Child friendly.
Disadvantages: A little expensive. Knife not that sharp.
My brother goes camping with his family literally every weekend over the summer - and so when I see a good idea that would enhance his camping experience, I like to buy it for him (as long as its not too expensive!). I first saw the "Light My Fire Spork" in a Travel Book Shop in London and thought it was a great idea - although they were really highly priced in that shop and so I thought I'd look them up when I got home. I managed to get a pack of four Sporks from Amazon.co.uk for £6.30 - which included the next-day delivery price also. I have since bought a packet for my kids to put in their lunch boxes.
Basically, the Light My Fire Spork is a utensil which acts as a knife, fork and spoon all in one and so it is really convenient for camping, picnics and lunch boxes. The way that it works is that at one end is the fork, at the other end is the spoon - and the knife which is less obvious is the bit in the middle and on one side of the fork. They come in a variety of bright colours - and in a plastic-type version and a Titanium version. I have bought the pack of four plastic-type version which contains a blue, green, yellow and red Spork. I did like the Titanium version but I felt that the coloured plastic versions were just more child friendly.
In my experience, the Sporks work really well - particularly the spoon and fork parts of the utensil. The prongs are pointy enough to go easily into all foods I have tried it with, and the spoon is about as deep as a teaspoon (5mls) which is okay if you're eating yoghurt, but a bit of a pain if you're eating soup! The knife can be a bit tricky to use as its not that sharp (hence kid friendly!) and it's hard to use it without another Spork to hold onto the food. However, if you are eating picnic style food (which generally is what my kids eat in their lunch boxes or what my brothers' family eat when camping) then its good enough.
Because the Spork is made of thick plastic, it is very durable and can put up with practically anything and everything that's thrown at it. It's easy to clean by hand, but it can go in the dishwasher if you prefer. Even with a lot of washing and use, the colours remain bright and scratch free. I also like how incredibly light the Sporks are - weighing just 8g each - which is very impressive considering how sturdy they are!
I think the Sporks are a good buy for anyone that goes camping, goes on picnics or makes packed lunches. They are fun, convenient and built to last. Oh, and I love the name!
Summary: I like.
