I've really come to love Lock and Lock boxes. They're absolutely brilliant for keeping things fresh and securely sealed, and there are such a wide range of sizes and shapes suitable for all kinds of products. Square ended ones designed especially for cream crackers for instance, or long recgtangles especially for bacon . In this review though, I'm going to focus on the bread box.
Now my box is exactly as shown in picture above, A clear plastic box, with satisfyingly thick and sturdy sides, with ridges on the upper edge that align brilliantly with holes in the flaps on the lid (four flaps, one for each edge) to give a very secure airtight seal. The company actually claim to give you a 100% airtight, watertight seal in just four clicks, and while I've never tested this claim by trying to drown my bread, I'm pretty convinced.
Using this is easy, simply click the flaps into place and this is very tightly and securely sealed. You can pick it up by the lid safely - you can even drop it, and the lid won't come off.
Talking about dropping it, these are very tough little boxes, and mine has had drops and knocks and is no worse for wear. Wonderfully, it is also microwave and freezer safe (obviously take the lid off for microwaving) which is very handy, as I sometimes use this for freezing large volumes of soup. The actual capacity of this box is nine litres, which is pretty impressive, and with the actual dimensions of the box being 11½" x 8¾" x 7½" , it's still a good size to slip into the freezer of fridge .
When using this for bread , I normally store it in it's bag inside the box, and never have any problems with it whatsoever. I did store the sliced bread the first few times out of the bag, and whilst admittedly this box kept it fresh, it meant I had to jeep washing the tub as it got all crumb-y . I'm lazy! It does, from my experience, keep bread that little bit moister and fresher tasting, and I certainly recommend it for it's intended purpose - and find it especially effective with unsliced fresh loaves, where the ends would normally dry out quickly.
One thing that has REALLY impressed me about this product is the lid. Not the security, which I've already mentioned and is indeed impressive, but the fact that this lid, unlike the lids of many other brands of airtight container, has never been warped by exposure to hot water, and has remained perfectly in shape. They also are dishwasher safe, although I don't have a dishwasher so can't comment on this .
I very much recommend not just this box, but all the Lock and Lock storage boxes- they are simply brilliant for keeping food items seperate and fresh . You can buy this box from a Lakeland store for £10.99, but before you go rushing there to get one, I would also recommend looking in your local 99p shop, as I've noticed a few of them starting to sell Lock and Lock products, and you might get lucky there!
A fantastic storage box, 5 stars .
