Advantages: Good and strong
Disadvantages: None really
We have had a box of these in the coffee cupboard for about 2 years now. We used to make filter coffee on a fairly regular basis and used these filters each time in our coffee maker.
These ones are made by one of the market leading filter paper makers, Melitta and they are widely available from all good outlets.
These cone shaped filters come in boxes of 40 or 80 filters and cost about £1.10 for the smaller pack. They have micro perforations and double crimped edges and do a good job in holding the coffee within the filter and letting it drip through the grounds fairly slowly, making sure you get the full flavour coffee, but also ensuring that you capture any bitter grounds and prevent them from making it into the final drink.
Convenience is also a big issue as the used paper cones can be merely thrown away with the spent grounds inside. These are strong; they are fully degradable and therefore environmentally friendly.
The filters come in various sizes and it is important to check that you get the right size for your coffee maker. For most standard coffee makers, Size 4 will do the job well; this fits a coffee maker which will produce between 8 and 12 cups of filter coffee.
I have used other filter papers in the past, but if they are too thin and if the seams are not crimped, they can either let the water through too quickly and/or burst with the weight of the grounds and the water. This can be very messy and also spoil your coffee.
A box of 40 papers will last a good long while in most households and work out at less than 3p each. It is also handy to have these in the house when you want to filter other liquids.
Good quality at a fair price.
Summary: Of those that I have tried, these are the best
