Microwave Egg Boilers
Advantages: quick eggs
Disadvantages: possible egg-splosion?
After reading a number of great egg accessory reviews from MALU I felt compelled to add my own. This is a review of Microcook microwave egg cookers. The packaging states it is a quick and convenient way to cook eggs.
When I was out shopping (in Home Bargains) I was actually after some egg cups just to stand a boiled egg in but then I saw these and liked the idea of them. They were a bargain price and stood up on their own, seemed easy to use and meant I didn't need to get a pan out to boil an egg.
Problems with boiling an egg
People use the example of 'boiling an egg' as an example of the easiest thing you can cook but I think it's not as simple as that. There are many problems that can occur when boiling an egg in a pan from the shell cracking to over cooking the egg etc. All these problems are overcome with this product.
The egg cookers are just slightly larger than a bit egg and shaped like an egg too. They have a lid which sits on the top whilst you cook the egg. Mine are white and came in minimalist cardboard packaging. You get two in a pack which is good for if you want to make two eggs to eat and also for minimalist storage when not in use.
Price and availability
I paid the grand sum of 69p for the two egg cookers from Home Bargains. You can buy them on Amazon for 1p plus postage and there are a number of similar egg cookers available on ebay.
After I bought the egg cookers, I went to my parent's house and asked my mum to try one of them for my daughter's lunch. Mum had just got a brand new microwave so I thought she'd like using it for something different. I don't know what she did but the egg exploded in her brand new microwave and she was very cross (with me!) so she got the pan out and made eggs the traditional way.
What went wrong?
I don't know what happened at Mum's but I decided a few days later to try it myself. I followed the directions, greased the base cup with butter, cracked the egg in and pierced the yoke and set it off for 30 seconds on full power. I had a look at it after 30 seconds and went for another 15 seconds to make it less runny. Result, a perfect boiled egg with gooey middle!
I love this new egg cooker and will use it a few times a week. I like that it is quick and easy to use, easy to clean and also means you don't risk getting shell on your spoon. You don't have to crack the egg top off either.
After reading this review if you like boiled eggs I'd be surprised if you feel you can still live without an egg cooker! Fair enough, some people don't have or use microwaves but I love how efficient this item is. Easy to use, easy to clean and you get all the egg without the mess of shell caving in. You could even use this to make boiled eggs for an egg mayo sandwich if you're a fan. It takes a little experimenting to work out how many seconds your microwave takes to reach perfection in the egg stakes but it is totally worth it. A big thumbs up from me and my daughter and I'd better not type what my mum said to me about this egg cooker!
