I purchased this a few days ago, but also had this a few years ago, but unfortunately lost the bottle, but I cam across it here, so thought it would be a good idea to give my take on it.
The brand is Myprotein. They are a growing company, and their stock has literally increased ten fold since I started using them around six years ago. Initially they stuck mainly to protein powders with a small range of other items, now protein is just a small element. They even provide ready meals, advice on how to reach your athletic goals, and of course accessories, and this is where the Blender bottle I am reviewing comes in.
Pretty much most people who take gym seriously know how important protein is. Of course in an ideal world every meal would contain enough protein, but we don't live in an ideal world, so protein shakes allow us to quickly consume protein after workouts. For these shakes, we need a blender bottle. This allows us to put the powder in and then after the workout we simply add water, shake and then consume. Simple as that.
Initially I had a shaker bottle from Holland and Barrets which set me back £3. This had a plastic grid just below the lid which is what of course helped mix the water and the protein powder to makes sure that there are no bits. The reason I decided to change was that I saw my friend had this bottle and what I liked about it is that instead of having the plastic grid, it has a metal blender ball. This is separate and not attached to the bottle. However I find it a lot more effective at mixing the powder and the liquid. There are certain powders that I find harder to mix, and I just found it a lot more effective using this shaker than the plastic grid type.
At the end of the day this is a bottle, so although it is ideally meant for mixing the powders, it is also convenient to use as a simple water bottle, I mean it depends really on what your purpose is. I wouldn't but it for the sole purpose of just drinking water from as that would be a waste of money.
The only issue I found was that the cap on the lid is a little loose. I didn't have that problem with the first bottle, so figure I just got an unlucky one from the batch. Don't get me wrong it is very usable, but if I am shaking it very hard, I have to keep one finger over it, to make sure it doesn't become loose and there is spillage. Apart from that there are no flaws here.
In terms of price we are looking at 1.98 on the myprotein website, and this is the best and cheapest place to buy it from as they are the manufacturers. Personally I think this is a higher quality bottle than the plastic grid ones that the likes of Holland and Barrets sell, as well as being cheaper, so I have no complaints in the price department.
Overall I think this is an excellent product, and even with the minor flaw with the lid, I will award this five stars, as there is nothing else on the market as good as this for as cheap as this. Also bare in mind you don't have to just use this for protein powders, you can use it for a number of different products ranging from oats to creatine. Check out the myprotein website for more information.
Ive been using whey protein for years and one of the major elements you have to consider is flavour, please see my review on myprotein impact whey.
The other big factor is what us protein gimps call mixability. Yes the factor of how easy it is to mix the whey powder into milk or water...trust me try milk its better. And a major factor of this is whether you use a fork in a large glass/mug or a mixing jug such as this.
So its worth hunting around for a good mixer it makes all the difference. The myprotein site has a couple of choices bottle design. The standard lattice structure bottle holds approx 700ml of liquid, and has a screw on and flip top lid. Inside you`ll find a plastic lattice grill like piece of plastic that fits within the top half of the jug just below the plastic lid. But these designs arnt very good. The lattice is hard to clean properly and whey powder gets caught in between the grid like structure and whey powder collects at the bottom and its hard to mix it up.
Then some bright spark thought that rather then try to mix up the powder up to the mixer, lets bring the mixer down to the powder.
So instead of a grill at the top of the bottle, the max blender has an aluminium coil much like a small metal spiral ball and this moves in the liquid as you shake it as a blender. It works very well and collects 99% of the powder, only the smallest residue is left behind.
These bottles hold around 600-650ml, which is just about enough to cover the water intake for a normal whey portion.
The screw top lid is also much more secure and I dont know if his has anything to do with the fact that there is no lattice structure, but the one I had last time without the coil had a leaky lid. Theis a flip top too and its quite big so you can intake large amounts of fluid rather easily. The plastic is frosted but like most jugs the graphic writing almost always eventually comes off, a combination of warm grip, endless washes etc.
The jug itself it very large, wide enough with the lide of to clean out relatively easily.
Most jugs fom companies have coils in them now as they are undistputedly better, but you can still buy a lattice one if you want.
This bottle will set you back £1.95 of your english sheets
I am not an avid member of a gym although I do have gym membership but I do use these shakers.... not for protein shakes but for slimfast shakes!
This protein shaker is cheap at £1.95. It stands at 22 cm tall and has a measuring gauge down one side so you know how much liquid (milk in my case) to add in. It also has rigged sides which makes it easy to hold.
The top is a screw top with a flip top lid which you can see from the picture. However I've found after a good few uses (used every day for nearly 5 months) the flip top doesn't stay secure and I've had a leakage but for the price I was happy to buy another one (I actually bought 3 though as the delivery charge was £3.95) and this one has been in use for only a few weeks..
The ingenious part of this shaker is the mesh ball which helps to break up the powder and liquid. I have found that after you have mixed the powder and liquid you need to shake it straight away otherwise some of the powder gets stuck to the bottom...It also makes my milkshakes quite frothy which I like too..
My Protein have changed the look of the bottle slightly from the picture though... its more see through and the logo has changed but the ball and lid are exactly the same... they do only have one colour though which some people may find irritating...
This is great shaker for the price though and I can't imagine replacing it with anything else..
As a long term user of shaker bottles to support my sports nutrition needs, I was keen to try another form of shaker. The first ones MP made used to leak horribly (NOT the Buschteiner shakers - they are awesome).
The plastic seems thicker than the Buschteiner shakers though, and has a vertical ridged effect - probably to help with grip, which only half works because it's completely smooth.
The spiral ball sits in the bottom and mixes the powders together as you shake. It doesn't really make too much noise unless you're mixing something quite watery, then you sound like a baby angrily shaking a rattle. Expect some raised eyebrows if you choose to do this in an airport, or on a train etc.
It does blend well. Even the instant oats which MP also sell blended well most of the time. Some lumps were still present however, and without the gauze that you get with the Buschteiner model, these marble sized lumps go straight into your mouth, which can be a bit off-putting. I do prefer the Buschteiner version for this reason, but this is a useful alternative.
Been an active member of my gym I always find myself on the same website for my supplements; MyProtein.co.uk.
This is where I stumbled across this new Blender Bottle.
This bottle is basically for mixing sports drinks that may not mix too well, such as dextrose, protein, leuicine and such products. They can be purchased from many good supplement and sports shops such as JJB to Holland and Barratt. The one thing you will notice about these bottles however is the price. They average around £4-5 in price per bottle, and when you get through a few bottles a day it comes quite costly in them.
This is when I decided to hunt around and looked on MyProtein. They have a couple of different bottles. Theres the standard Blender bottle, which holds approx 700ml of liquid, with a screw on and flip top lid. There is also like a grill thats placed on to just before the lid to help mix the contents. I have had many of these in the past so decided to try the newly designed Max Blender Bottle.
Instead of a grill at the top of the bottle, it comes with a small metal spiral ball as a blender. Its so simple, being a spring, but works so well. Its true that simplicity works.
These bottles hold a little less however at around 600-650ml, but thats not a massive problem.
With a secure lid and flip top for drinking from, I am never afraid of one leaking in my gym bag as this has happened in the past with several other brands.
The design is limited with a frosted colour plastic bottle with blue lid. I think a good idea would be for the company to designed different colour lids. This being so simple, but if different drinks contain different supplements (pre or posr workout for example), then you can simply remember which colour is what drink.
Being a little wide in size it makes them very easy to clean up and with the blender being a spring its no problem bending it about to getting it completely clean.
The best part about this bottle however is not just the new design but the price. They are £1.95 each making them less than half the price of other competitors. This is a fantastic price and due to this I havent changed my bottles since!
What a GREAT BOTTLE!
With having four sons aged 19 years upwards ( 2 still live at home!), we seem to have an endless pile of protein bottles needing to be washed out!
Being that seems to have become my job, I was pleased when they decided
to purchase this particular bottle.
The other ones they used to buy were similar to look at, but they are made completely different. They had a push on lid ( when trying to remove I would
have a tug of war with them, then the last dredges went all over ME!)
Once the lid was removed, in the neck there was a removeable seive, which was for mixing the shake when shaken. On the lid was a bendy arm which you could move about so you could drink from the cap.
Well these ones have a screw on lid, which is a lot easier to put on with no chance of it flicking of in their sports bag!
Once you have unscrewed it there is a metal spiral ball which just sits in the bottom. When you shake these up they get a really good mix up with this metal ball. The lid also has a much better cap from drinking from, as the
arm can be moved to flip back and forth without getting in the way when
you drink from these!
I don't know what it is about these bottles but they seem so much easier to
clean out, just a rinse, then a drop of washing up liquid a good shake then hey presto they are done!
The bottles seem to be made from a much better plastic as it is quite firm
and sturdy. The bottles hold 600ml and cost just £1.95.
You can order these bottles online along with the protein powders to go in
These can be bought at www.myprotein.co.uk
I ordered this because the standard shaker was out of stock, and was admittedly a little cautious as the bottle was MyProtein's own make, and not something I had seen before. This item was in my first order, and when it arrived the next day (really pleased with the timing) by Parcelforce I had the chance to put it to the test.
I have not had any experience with any other type of shaker or blender bottle, but this seems to be perfect for the price and what it does. I bought some of the Impact Whey Protein to be used with it, and when using both milk and water this bottle blends it together perfectly creating a really nice tasting and smooth shake. I have not had any leaks, the seal at the top is perfect and the lid stays on nice and tight, if you are ordering anything from MyProtein then be sure to get this!
