Great for us, but these would not suit everyone - consider the size of them before you buy.

I bought these for my partner for Christmas - a bit of fun because he is a big Nigella fan and I made a bit of a "bundle" of gifts including her recipe book etc. I wouldn't normally pay over the odds for a "name" to a product but this was an exception. They are not cheap for what they are, I paid £14 from Amazon although looking there now they seem to be a bit cheaper (grrr!).

They come well protected in polystyrene and packaged in pale blue boxes (all looking very "Nigella"!). I admit when I got them out of the box, the size (or lack) of them was a bit of a shock. They are each only about 2-3 inches wide x 3-4 inches tall. This makes the opening to put your fingers in to pinch the salt or pepper about 2 inches across at the most. This is a potential problem for anyone with large hands/fingers, as you want to be able to reach in quickly and easily if using them whilst cooking. The picture is a bit deceiving though, and below the opening there is actually a deceptively large area for the salt and peppercorns to sit, so they do hold quite a bit.

We use these by the side of the cooker for adding seasoning to the cooking, I personally don't think they are suitable for tableware, even though they were billed as such - you don't necessarily want everyone dipping their hands into a communal salt and pepper pot during the meal - maybe that's just me?! They look really classy on the side in the Kitchen, though - I'm not one for clutter at all, but these look smart and tidy against my dark worktops. They are ceramic, and the finish is a beautiful matt black which not only looks great but is also really tactile! They sit snugly on their little tray and most of any grains you may lose from your fingertips are caught in there, making it easy to keep the area tidy. Having said that, we have had a couple of major spillages by knocking them off their tray, so whilst its a 'snug' fit, its not the sturdiest arrangement, and the piglets themselves are quite lightweight. This is something to be aware of, especially when cooking is getting frantic!

Despite feeling a little bit like I paid over the odds for these because of their small size, I am glad I did as I like the classy look of them and they are really handy and a bit unusual.
